    Analysis of Value Content of Civic Education and Social Studies for Citizenship Values in Nigeria.

    The link between Civic Education and Social Studies is a unique one, the Social Studies curriculum consists of citizenship and societal values, which are also related to Civic Education. This makes the two subjects to be seen as a strong and effective tool to facilitate the production of responsible citizens. Teaching and learning of Social Studies will be meaningful when it is value-based, teachers are expected to guide the students to acquire value education inherent in many topics in the two subjects. However, it must be noted that the purpose of education is for citizenship. But to ensure that students develop an understanding of their country’s most cherished values becomes a debate between Civic Education and Social Studies in the Nigerian educational system. Values are to be rated as important contents of both subjects offered to students at the Basic level in Nigeria. Hence, the need to ascertain the subject that communicates the good values that can contribute to training the learners to assume the status of being a citizen. This study examined the value content of civic education and Social Studies towards citizenship values in Nigeria education system based on the topics taught in the two subjects. The study adopted an ex post facto research design in analyzing the curriculum content of both Civic Education and Social Studies. The collected data were analyzed with descriptive statistics and the findings showed that the value content of Social Studies is greater than that of Civic education. This further testifies to the general agreement that Civic Education is a dimension and subset of Social Studies. The study, therefore, recommended that Social Studies be promoted over Civic Education at all levels of education for effective citizenship value in Nigeria.

    Motivational Inclination among teachers of Civic Education in Senior Secondary Schools in Ilorin

    Abstract The basic responsibility of any trained teacher is to demonstrate the competence of being a teacher and the best way to sustain this is when they are internally or externally motivated. Therefore, the study investigated teachers’ perceived sources of motivation in teaching civic education in senior secondary school in Ilorin. The study adopted a descriptive research design. The population of the study consisted of all civic education teachers in Ilorin East, South and West Local Government areas of Kwara state. While a sample of 100 civic education teachers was purposively selected across public and private senior secondary schools. The Teachers’ Motivational Inclination for Teaching Civic Education Questionnaire (TMITCEQ)” was designed and used to elicit information from respondents. The Cronbach Alpha reliability value of the items of the questionnaire is 0.78. Descriptive statistics of frequency counts, percentage and mean were used to answer the research questions and hypotheses. Findings from the study revealed that passion for teaching as a profession, and respect for teachers in the immediate community among other types of job satisfaction were the major motivational inclination of teachers of civic education. Also, it was revealed that teachers in Ilorin, were motivated when there is, effective student entry behaviour for intensive classroom participation. However, it was also revealed that regular stipends in recognition that teaching the subject is somewhat an additional task and recognition for teachers’ opinion and supports motivates teachers in teaching civic education. A significant relationship was established between teachers’ motivational inclination and the teaching of civic education in senior secondary schools. The study also found that there is no significant relationship between teachers’ motivational inclination and teaching of civic education in public and private senior secondary schools. It was recommended that all education stakeholders should give maximum respect to anyone who chose to teach as a profession in their community. The government and all school owners should sustain the motivational modality that best inclined the teachers to teach civic education in both public and private senior secondary schools in Nigeria for the better attainment of objectives.

    Teachers’ Attitude towards Inclusive Educational Practices in upper Basic Schools in Ilorin, Nigeria.

    This research work explored the attitudes of teachers towards inclusive educational practices in upper basic schools in Ilorin, Nigeria. It adopted a descriptive research design. Eight schools from public and seven from private were selected, using purposive random sampling technique. 200 respondents were selected from selected schools using simple random sampling technique. One research question was answered and three null hypotheses were tested. Data collected through a researcher designed questionnaire were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The findings revealed that the attitudes of the teachers towards inclusive educational practices was negative. The finding of the study also showed that, years of teaching experience is not a determinant of teachers’ attitude towards inclusive education as there was no significant difference in the attitude of teachers based on years of experience. Finally, it was also discovered that teachers do not have different opinion in their perception on the inclusive educational practices. Based on these findings, it was recommended that students with special needs should be placed in a separate school so that teachers who are trained specifically for students who falls into such category would equip them passionately with necessary knowledge, skills and attitudes that make them responsible and recognisable members of their society.

    Utilizing Islamic Moral Values in Curbing Excesses during Ceremonies.

    ABSTRACT The backdrop of this paper has to do with the experience and observation of the writers as regards the manners in which food is being served at ceremonies and the extent to which the guests of the ceremonies treat the excess food being served. This has been noticed and has been a source of concern over the years at different ceremonies in our society, be it burial, naming or wedding ceremonies. There are various categories of people found within the premises where ceremonies are taking place these categories of people are ranked at many ceremonies, and this paper discusses those categories to sensitize the general populace to the right categories of people who should be served food and the right proportion expected to be dish and consumed at ceremonies in other to curb excess food from waste. Islam acknowledges that humans will embark on many actions for survival, among which ceremonies and food are included this is the reason for justifying the above submission with an Islamic Economy perspective. This paper proffers certain tips to curb excess food and prevent waste, it was concluded that whether rich or poor the time has ripe to sensitize people to operate under the limit of what is normal in the sight of humans and that of Almighty Allah. The paper recommends among others that whoever reads this paper should take it as the duty to communicate the message to those who need it and starting with ones’ family, relatives, neighbours who can also sensitize others.
