Comparative assessment of chlorophyll content, yield parameters and nutrients of three varieties of cowpea (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp)
    (Science World Journal, 2025) Olayinka B. U.; Ogungbemi, R. F.; Babatunde, M. O.; Mahmud, H. U.; Ogundare, K. O.
Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L.), is a vital crop in sub-Saharan Africa, that contributes significantly to nutrition, food security, and income generation. The varieties abound vary in the bio-productivity and nutritional status, hence the need to evaluate the agronomic performance and nutritional value of the three newly improved cowpea varieties (Sampea 11, Sampea 12, and Sampea 15) that are cultivated in the Northern Savanna zone of Nigeria. In this study, growth parameters chlorophyll content, and yield components were assessed. Additionally, proximate and mineral analyses which provided insights into the nutritional profiles of these varieties were also investigated. Results identified Sampea 15 as the superior variety, in terms of chlorophyll content, seed weight, protein, fat, energy value, sodium, phosphorus, zinc and manganese. These findings underline the potential of Sampea 15 to enhance food security and nutritional outcomes in West Africa, where malnutrition remains a significant challenge. Considering the superiority of Sampea 15 over all other varieties, there is a need for an agricultural extension officer to make this variety known to the farmers for cultivation in the Southern Guinea savanna ecological zone where the study was carried out.

Comparative evaluation of seed quality and physico-chemical properties of groundnut varieties consumed in Nigeria
    (AAU J. Physical & Applied Sciences, 2025) Olayinka, B. U.; Lawal, A. R.; Abdulkareem, K A.; Kareem, I.; Babatunde, M. O.; Ayinla, A.; Sagaya, A.; Mustapha, O. T.
Groundnuts have been established to have great health benefits due to their biochemical constituents. Varieties abound, differing in their quality of seed and oil characteristics; hence, the need to continually assess the characteristics of the seeds, most importantly the improved varieties, whose chemical composition and physico-chemical properties are scant in the literature. In this study, the proximate, mineral and physico-chemical properties of five groundnut varieties (KAMPALA, SAMNUTS 23, 24, 25 and 28) were evaluated using standard procedures. The results revealed that crude protein, fat and fibre were higher in SAMNUT23 when compared to other varieties. Aside from ash and carbohydrate, the KAMPALA variety recorded the lowest values of all parameters. Regardless of varietal differences in mineral elements, the seeds were rich in phosphorus, sodium, potassium, and magnesium, compared to other essential elements such as zinc, iron, copper, and nitrogen. However, the mineral elements were significantly higher in SAMNUT varieties when compared to KAMPALA. The physico-chemical properties did not show appreciable differences except for acid value, iodine value and saponification values, which were significantly lowest in SAMNUT28. The findings revealed that all the SAMNUTvarieties, especially SAMNUT23, 24 and 25, had superior quality; hence, their use in seed certification, food processing and breeding programmes within the groundnut value chain in Nigeria should be encouraged.

    (Nigerian Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences, 2025-09) Giwa, H. B.; Shittu, H. D.; Babatunde, M. O.; Jamiu, O. M.; Aiyelero, O. M.; Eniayewu, O. I.; Giwa, A.; Abdul, A.; Atunwa, S. A.; Giwa, F. S
ABSTRACT This study aimed to evaluate the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and related factors among patients receiving antimalarial treatment at a General hospital Ilorin (GHI). Participants were drawn after a sample size of 291 participants were calculated. An EQ-5D-5L, EQ-VAS instrument was used to collect the data (from July to September 2023). Informed consent was obtained from all participants, and Ethical approval was obtained from Ministry of Health Ethical Research Committee (ERC) and Ethical Review and Research Committee of General Hospital Ilorin (GHI) with assigned number: ERC/MOH/2023/07/130 and GHI/ADM/134/VOL.I/081 respectively. Of the 291 participants included, 182 (62.5%) were female, and 109 (37.5%) were male. Most of the participants were aged 18–24 years (93; 32%), had tertiary education (195; 67%), and had low incomes, earning less than ₦3,000 (126; 43.3%). Also, a significant majority lacked health insurance (211; 72.5%). The most commonly used treatment was Artemether/Lumefantrine (281; 96.6%). The mean EQ-5D utility scores and EQ-VAS scores were 0.74 ±0.152 and 67.17±19.48 respectively. The EQ-5D descriptive system had 11111 as the health state of majority of participants 89(30.6%) followed by 11121 (19)6.5%, both states having utilities of 0.9 and 0.646 respectively. Sixty-three-point six percent of participants had problem in the pain and discomfort domain. The results of multivariate regression analysis showed marital status (p=0.005) and family history (p= 0.004) of any disease correlated with EQ-5D-5L index score (Health state). These variables contributed approximately 58.93% and 41.07% respectively to the EQ-5D index score of patients. The findings indicate that malaria patients in this study generally reported a good health-related quality of life. Most participants experienced minimal problems across domains except for pain/discomfort Socio-demographic factors such as marital status and family history of disease had significant influence on HRQoL, suggesting that social support and underlying health vulnerabilities play crucial roles in patients’ well-being. Overall, malaria’s impact on HRQoL extends beyond clinical symptoms, underscoring the need for patient-centered care that addresses both physical and psychosocial factors. (Science Journal of University of Zakho, 2024) Olayinka, B. U.; Babatunde, M. O.; Ogundare, G. O.; Kayode, O. V.; Muhammad, T. H.; Daramola, G. G.; Bulala, A. F.; Abdulbaki, S.A.
Bryophyllum pinnatum and Phyllanthus amarus are plants that have been established to contain bioactive substances for various therapeutic advantages, most importantly their leaves. Information on the other parts of the plant, such as stem and root, is scanty in literature; hence, there is a need to compare the various parts of the plants in terms of proximate composition, phytochemicals, and mineral elements. The results showed that the two plants had the highest amount of carbohydrate (62.09 - 63.98%) and followed in decreasing order of magnitude by protein (16.04 - 17.50%), moisture (10.05 - 10.35%), fibre (3.9 - 4.36%) and ash (3.80 - 4.03%). The fat contents in both plants ranged from 1.09% to 2.03% in Phyllanthus amarus and Bryophyylum pinnate leaves, respectively. Alkaloids (106.97 - 108.46 mg/100g) were highest in all the plants, while steroids (0.11 - 0.17 mg/100g) were lowest. Generally, in both plant parts, the leaf and stem had a higher amount of the foregoing proximate and phytochemicals when compared to the root. Considering the macronutrients, all the plant parts contained the highest amount of potassium (29.04 - 30.03 mg/100g) and the lowest amount of nitrogen (0.25 - 0.27%). Iron (26.3 - 27.7 mg/100g) was the highest among the micronutrients, while copper was the lowest (0.70 - 0.73 mg/100g). The study concluded that both plants showed proximate phytochemicals and mineral nutrients that were unevenly distributed in the various parts of the plant, with the leaf and stem exhibiting higher concentrations compared to the root. Therefore, adequate knowledge of the distribution of these chemical constituents will provide a baseline for the selection of parts to be used for health benefits.
