Relevance and Uses of Information and Communication Technology among selected Adult Market Women in Ilorin West LGA of Kwara State
(Journal of Nigerian National Council for Adult Education., 2019-08-03) Sholagberu, A. O.,; Kayode, S. T.,; Alakoso, I. M.
This paper evaluated the relevance and uses of ICT (Information and Communications Technology) among market women in West Local Government Area of Kwara State. The objectives were to unravel the extent of ICT literacy among women, to evaluate the relevance of ICT among selected market women, and to examine the extent to which ICT is use by women to empower themselves through sustainable poverty reduction. A total of 120 market women participated in the study it was revealed that from the finding that ICTs offer a wide range of information and knowledge, which are critical components of poverty alleviation strategies, ICT are viewed as near-magic solution to problems which proved useful as it provides information on prices, markets, technology and potential entrepreneurship skills. It was concluded that women entrepreneurs’ use of ICT infrastructure and systems in Ilorin West Local Government Area of Kwara State is limited and even the ones in use are not widely explored and channeled for business development. It was recommended among others that there is a need to establish women’s clubs and the existing ones strengthen in communication skills and ICTs just as in the case of a group (Self Employed Women ‘s Association) in India in where the rural women were trained in the production and use of video to generate income, disseminate new skills and to advocate for changes in policy, thus ICTs will not only empower the gender but sustain poverty alleviation programmes which in time past have failed in Nigeria through provision of new and enhanced opportunities for participation in the process of self-determination, economic, social, educational and cultural advancement and employment beyond the scope of traditional institutions and any forms of governance.
