J.The main objective of this paper is to theoretically discuss and assess the criminal justice in Nigeria from 2003 to 2007 during Obasanjo’s second term as a civilian president in Nigeria. The paper used control theory to review the role of the criminal justice in Nigeria. The paper pointed out that, despite the huge financial and human resources that were made available to the organs charged with the duty of enforcing law and order in Nigeria, the performance of the Nigeria police force, courts and prisons in Nigeria were far below public expectation during the period under review. The paper further explained that the main aim or goals of the criminal justice in Nigeria, among others, is to ensure enforcement of laws, peace and order punishment, correction and rehabilitation of offenders etc. However, or contrary to their established roles, the police, courts, and prisons were often accused of engaging in extra-judicial killings, failure to unravel and charge to courts many cases of politically motivated killings among others. The paper further pointed out that courts in Nigeria were often accused of deliberately delaying justice while the prisons were places of hardening criminals instead of being a place of correction and rehabilitation. The paper concluded and recommended that for better performance, the judiciary should be made independent indeed and not seen and treated as an appendage of the executive arm of the government among other recommendations.Item HIV/AIDS Epidemic and its Socio-economic Effects in Africa(Department of Sociology, University of Ilorin, 2013) Akor S. J.HIV/AIDS epidemic is a global scourge threatening human existence. Global effort by researchers, scholars and medical experts to bring the epidemic to a halt is on-going. Different scholars and researchers all over the world have tried to trace the origin, spread and effects of the disease. Some scholars have tagged the epidemic as "African or Black man's burden" of the century. Even though the spread of the epidemic is global in nature Africa as a developing nation has her own share of the global scourge cult HIV/AIDS and the effects is visible on social, political, economic and religious life of Africa society among others. This paper describes the devastating effects of HIV/AIDS epidemic on Africa. The paper relies on the use of secondary source of data collection to point out that, the spread, effects of HIV/AIDS in Africa is on the increase despite the large amount of resource committed to fight the disease. The paper concludes that instead of over relying on the claim in some literature, news reports and Television jingles all over the world that the mortality rate, spread and effects is now at a minimal level in Africa and world-wide, a more realistic approach should be devised to bring the scourge to a halt.Item Masculinity in Postmodernism: A Primordial Discourse of a Changing Face in Africa(Department of Sociology Federal University Gusau, 2021) Saliman T. S.; Akor S. J.; Abdullahi A. A.Phenomenological studies expanded a broader view on peoples’ lived experiences, where perceptions, perspectives and interpretations of human dynamic structures were advanced, the essence of which is to generate or add to existing knowledge about human phenomena. As a result, phenomenological studies have generated a number of controversial and hitherto unresolved issues. Topical issues in phenomenology include biological and social determinants of humans, in relation to family type and structure, language, culture, sexuality, environment and exposure to circumstantial aesthetics, which in a great deal affect images and functional roles in the society. One major issue that appears to have a recurrent implication in Africa and Nigeria in particular is masculinity. The conception of masculinity and its damaging effects on societal value system is far reflected in the ways and manners by which the young people dogmatically imbibe and in some cases, try to transform to ‘misguided’ social roles. Against this background, this article conceptualizes the gaps in being a “male” and a “man” with the conclusion that family institution and responsibility should prevail in the nurturing of societal values, in order to guide against yet unknown, but inevitable clash in gendering pattern and implications.Item Nigerian in the year 2020: Toward a Development Agenda in Democratic setting(Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai, 2008) Akor S. A.; Adekeye I. B.; Akor S. J.Nigeria Demographic and Health Surveys (NDHS) have indicated that more than 15% of Nigerian girls become sexually active by the age of 15 and by 24 years of age, almost all boys in Nigeria are sexually active. Incidentally, the majority of the adolescents are concentrated in secondary or high schools. This study provides a sociological account of adolescents' sexual and health preventive behaviours in two purposively selected secondary schools in Ilorin. Questionnaire was used to gather data from a total of 150 respondents. Data were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The study found that more than half of the respondents (58.7%) were sexually active, 30.7% of whom became sexually active before the age of 20 years. All sexually active respondents (100%) were carrying out sexual activities without the knowledge of parents and guardians, a clear indication of lack of or inadequate parent-child parent/child communication regarding reproductive health. The study found evidence of relationships between peer pressure and sexual initiation ($X^2$ value, 34.914, critical value, 5.99 at 5% level of significance) as well as socio-economic status (SES) and sexual behaviour (calculated $X^2$ value, 12.3; critical value, 6.63 at 5% level of significance). A significant number of the respondents (59.3%) were aware of the term STIs and how they can be contracted and transmitted. However, 78% of the respondents were not aware of the immediate and long term health consequences of STIs. Nevertheless, a statistical relationship was found between education and knowledge of STIs where the calculated chi square (150) was found to be greater than the critical value (9.21) at 0.01 level of significance and 2 degree of freedom. The study has provided some guide for reproductive health leadership and governance in Secondary schools in Ilorin and Nigeria as a whole.Item Socio-Demographic Factors Influencing Risky Sexual Behaviour Among Youths in Ilorin Metropolis(Department of Sociology, Osun State University, Osogbo, 2019) Akor S. J.Youths are the spine of all nations. Contributions being made towards development all over the world involve youths in one way or another. However, the period of youth is quite problematic. It is a stage in which people are just discovering various elements of themselves. As such, the youths fall prey to involvement in risky sexual behaviours. Risky sexual behaviours are quite harmful physically and mentally. As such, the study sought to determine the nature of the relationship between socio-demographic factors and an involvement in risky sexual behaviours on the part of youths. The study made use of the Health Belief model in order to facilitate greater understanding of risky sexual behaviour. The study adopted a mixed design, adopting both the quantitative and qualitative methods of data collection and analysis. Using a two-stage sampling technique, 230 respondents were selected for the study with five respondents also purposively selected from the sample for interview. The obtained data were analysed using chi-square, spearman rank correlation and content analysis. The analysed data revealed that gender is significantly associated to preference for sex using condom. The study also revealed that a significant association exists between gender and performance of oral sex on partner. The study further revealed that age is significantly associated to practice of anal sex. Based on these, the study recommends that youths need to be educated on various sexual activities, the risks involved and safety measures to be taken to prevent it.Item Stakeholders and Tertiary Education in Nigeria, an Appraisal(Department of Sociology, University of Lagos, 2006) Akor S. J.The main objective of this chapter is to assess the contributions of stakeholders to development of tertiary education in Nigeria. Anchoring this chapter on functionalist theory, it posits that stakeholders are expected to play an active role in the development of tertiary education in Nigeria. Some of the roles which the Family/Parents are supposed to play include the socialization of students by being role models for them to follow. Religious institutions on the other hand, should play the role of inculcating in them the spirit of honesty, sincerity and consideration for other fellow human beings among other things. The paper points out that due to the neglect of the desired roles by the stakeholders, our tertiary institutions have become breeding grounds for gangsterism, cultism, prostitutions and some of their products might turn out to be half-baked graduates. The chapter concludes by making recommendations that can change the tide of the ugly situation. Among some of the recommendations is that government should stop paying lip service to the issue of educational development and funding and perform in a manner that guarantees adequate funding and management for the sustainable development of education to achieve their desired objectivesItem The Menace of Female Prostitution in Nigeria(Faculty of Business and Social Sciences, University of Ilorin, 2007) Akor S.
