This study investigated university lecturers’ readiness towards the integration of social media for teaching: a case study of university of Ilorin. The study was anchored on virtual learning community and adopted a descriptive type of survey. It used researchers’ designed questionnaire to elicit responses from 99 randomly sampled lecturers from 3 faculties of university of Ilorin. The questionnaire consisted of 30 items with a 0.83 reliability index after a test re-test pilot was conducted at an interval of two weeks. Weighted mean score was used to answer the three raised research questions. Findings of the study revealed that majority of lecturers are ready to use social media for teaching but not all lecturers are skilled in the use of social media for its integration in teaching. In this vein, the study recommended among others that university management should organize workshops to train lecturers on the use of social media for its integration in teaching. L.This study is an online survey on the presence of Nigerian universities on social media platforms. The purpose of the paper was to examine the level of presence of Nigerian Universities on five social media platforms which include: Face book, Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn and Google+. Three research questions were generated and one null hypothesis was formulated for this study. In the methodology, the internet served as the primary source of data, while Nigerian universities’ websites were used as secondary sources. All 129 accredited Nigerian Universities by the National Universities Commission were sampled for this study. Descriptive statistics (Percentage, Mean Rating and Standard Deviation) were used to answer research questions 1 and 2 while inferential statistics (Chi-Square) was used to test and analyse the null hypothesis. Report of Micaiah (2014) on Social Media Awareness in Nigeria Education which states that Nigerian universities’ presence on social media is minimal, was used as a guide; its methodology and data were also adapted for this study. The result showed that Nigerian Universities’ presence on social media platforms was 19% which is below par, compared to the unprecedented social media user base among Nigerian university students. In the analysis of the hypothesis, it was revealed that university ownership does not significantly determine the presence of Nigerian universities on social media platforms. It thus recommends that universities in Nigeria should as a matter of urgency, create a central unit of social media services to manage all necessary social media activities of their institutions, and to heighten Nigerian Universities’ presence on social media platforms which would create a mindset on educational goals and attainment among academics and students in Nigeria.Item Social media exposure and materialistic values: A dilemma for undergraduates of Lagos State University(School of Technology Education, Federal University of Technology, Minna, Nigeria, 2017) Yusuf, Hamdallat; Odutayo, Adesegun; Akintola, Mubarak; Yusuf, AmiduThis study explored social media exposure and materialistic values of unde4rgraduates of Lagos State University, Nigeria. Cultivation and social realism served as the theoretical base for the study, and literature was reviewed along these perspectives. It was an online survey and undergraduates of Lagos State University served as the total population. Purposive sampling technique was used to randomly select undergraduates of Lagos State University who are on Instagram. Lagos State University official Instagram page formed the existing database as it was used as the platform to request the participation of undergraduates in the 5minutes online survey. The instrument had Sections A, B & C. In section B, participants responded to a 10-item short version of Material Values Scale (MVS, Richins, 2004) while section C was a 10-item statements on social media exposure. Mean and standard deviation were used to answer and calculate research questions 1 and 2. While research question 3 had corresponding research hypothesis which was tested and analysed with paired t-test at 0.05 level of significance. Output of the analysis revealed that there is significant relationship between social media exposure and materialistic values among undergraduates. The study recommended the need for social media literacy through its introduction as a theme/topic/course in social studies curriculum at all levels of education to educate users on the dangers and also enhance the positive traits of social media.Item Understanding positive and negative uses of social media among University undergraduates: Sociological perspectives(The College of Education, Al-Hikmah University, Ilorin, Nigeria, 2015) Bello, Muhinat Bolanle; Akintola, Mubarak; Uyanne, E. OThis paper is theoretical in scope as it highlights the positive and negative uses of social media among University Undergraduates in Nigeria. In a bid to understand the dimensional usage of social media, this paper draws from sociological perspectives, asserting that no sociologist would approach the study of social life without making a choice from the pool of perspectives available. Thus, this paper employed an eclectic approach in recognition of the postmodern era of the global society which entails that theoretical analysis using old sociological theories would not suffice but postmodern theories for a postmodern world. The tripartite theories analysed in this paper are to assist in forging understanding on the global phenomenon of social media and its implication on education and also serve as the underpinnings for the literature review on social media studies. This paper concluded that social media is a symbol of evolution in university education and society at large, dangling between innovation (transformation of Nigerian education) and stability (preservation of Nigerian education). Social media offer universities a formidable presence as they are utilized by higher ranked global universities. In this study, the sociability of universities in Nigeria is premised on how these universities use social media to enhance their presence, visibilities, engagement and interactive approaches for higher global ranking and development. Thus, this study investigated the sociability of universities in social media era for sustainable development of university education in Nigeria. The research type was an online survey method where data from Nigerian Universities Commission (NUC) were used to identify 143 accredited universities in Nigeria. Five social media sites served as the measurement scale for universities’ sociability. Three research questions were raised and one research hypothesis was formulated. Percentage, and frequency counts were used to answer research questions 1 & 2 and result was presented in a bar chart. Research question 3 had corresponding hypothesis which was tested and analysed with chi-square at 0.05 critical level of significance. Findings revealed that the sociability of Nigerian universities is low and that university generation does not significantly differentiate sociability of Nigerian universities on social media. In this vein, this study recommended among others that universities need to shed the lukewarm attitude to social media use and embrace this phenomenon in order to cease the initiative and chart a beneficial course of using social media for the sustainable development of university education.
