In the late 20th century, the first law providing for marriage of the same sex in modern times was enacted in 2001 in the Netherlands. As of 1 January 2016, fifteen countries allow same-sex couples to marry. One of the most volatile and important issues facing the Church today is the question of Gay Marriage. Apparently, its practice has existed for centuries. Several approaches have been employed in determining its foundation and causation, much of which have only led to further controversies. The rapid rise in the advocacy of Gay Marriage and its consequent legalization in many countries of the world not only by the Gay radicals but also by persons within the church, have made it imperative for the church to voice out on her tenets and beliefs. Historical, exegetical and sociological methods are adopted in this paper. This paper has enhanced a comprehensive understanding of the plights of Gay Activists and as well, the biblical stand on Gay Marriage. It was also established that same-sex marriage is foreign to biblical injunctions, and unacceptable. While it is true that those with flair for the same-sex are in need of sincere help; it is recommended that the dangers of Gay Marriage be propagated in order to prevent many more from falling victims. It is hoped that the true intent of human sexuality would be recognized, practiced and pursued.Item CHARACTER TRAINING FOR NATIONAL VALUES: A RELIGIOUS CONSIDERATION(The General Studies division,University of Ilorin,Ilorin Nigeria, 2017) Aliy, Abdulwahid Adebisi; Ajetomobi, Olumuyiwa AduralereUndoubtedly man today, in his globalized village stands on the edge of a precipice. He is groaning under the agony of the evil effects of corruption. His present is unpalatable and his future is unpredictable murky. Corruption has eaten up the societal fabric into its marrow. It has resulted in political insecurity and violence which has great effects on participatory democracy, peace, political security and the consolidation of democracy since independence up to the fourth republic. Reasons for these include the failure of the ‘godsons’ to satisfactorily reward their ‘godfathers’ especially in terms of appointments and sharing of state resources in exchange for various supports received from the godfathers. One noticeable trend since independence till now is the factor of Godfatherism and its relationship with the Godson, which has in a way affected administration and governance in a number of states in the country. This phenomenon has assumed so dangerous monstrous a dimension that it has now become a subject of discourse among scholars and commentators alike. This paper which adopted a historio-analytical approach of study, therefore examines the concept of Godfatherism and its effects on governance in Nigeria. It gives suggestions on how to overcome the menace of Godfatherism in the total polity of the nation.Item An Examination Jesus Servant Leadership: A Model for Political Leaders in Nigeria(Mcpherson Journal of Humanities, 2017-11-17) Ajetomobi, Olumuyiwa AduralereThe absence of selfless and compassionate leadership contributes to the problems hindering the growth and development of Nigeria as a nation. The challenges are identified in the church, academia, business industry, civil service and most pronounced among the political class. Jesus Christ developed a leadership model which has proven efficacious for the stable growth of Christianity and this reflected in the life of the Apostles. Since Nigeria’s amalgamation in 1914, the nation has been struggling to build a united state out of its numerous nationalities, largely due to lack of effective leadership. Leadership in Jesus’ teaching is a relational means of ensuring the wellbeing of mankind. He taught that the greatest among his disciples should be their servant (Matt9:33-37), (Luke9:46-48), (John13:2-13). This is the origin of the concept of Servant-Leader which Christ exemplified i.e. leading by example, with a spirit of humility, selfless service, compassion and the fear of God. Nigerian leaders must re-orientate themselves to have a follower-focused relational model. This study recommends the servant leadership model as seen in Jesus teaching and lifestyle for political leaders in Nigeria so that the masses will enjoy full benefit of the nation’s resources.Item An Examination of the Impacts of Religion in Nation Building(Kwasu Journal of Islamic, Christian and Comparative Studies, 2018-04) Adeyeye, Agnes Omotayo; Ajetomobi, Olumuyiwa AduralereFor decades, the desire to build a just, orderly, peaceful and progressive society has been uppermost in the minds of Nigerian leaders. But due to external influences on them, their mission and vision continue to remain a mirage. These influences coupled with high level of corruption, poverty and selfishness, lack of contentment increased their problems. This made the Nigerian leaders derail from their avowed vision and mission with the result that at the end of a leader’s tenure little or no progress would have been made. Corruption, poverty, selfishness and other social vices would be on the increase. Hence, the goal of nation building is not achieved. This is causing grave concern to well-meaning members of the society. Religion’s stern qualities of sincerity, honesty, selfless service to humanity, contentment among other qualities appear to be a better alternative for building a progressive and a sustainable society. The paper adopted analytical and descriptive methods in order to achieve the purpose of the paper. The findings of the study validate the fact that a progressive society anchored on the afore-mentioned qualities which are essential for building a progressive Nigerian Society. These qualities are the core teachings of every religion. The study further discovered some vital innate qualities in religion that make for sincerity of purpose, contentment and selfless services irrespective of internal and external factors. This paper asserts that it is wise and realistic for the multi religious society of Nigeria to look into the common values inherent in the various religions towards a viable and peaceful coexistence capable of enhancing holistic development of the nation.Item INTER-ETHNIC CONFLICT IN NIGERIA: IMPLICATIONS FOR NATIONAL DEVELPOMENT(Alore: Ilorin Journal of Humanities, 2016-06-15) Ajetomobi, Olumuyiwa Aduralere; Lawal, Owolabi Joseph; Ajewole, Adewale DavidInter-ethnic conflict is seen as violence between ethnic groups “involving killing the enemy in addition to burning and destroying their crops, livestock and dwellings.”This paper serves as a critical part of an overall objective to develop and promote mechanisms for the understanding and resolution of ethnic and religious conflicts in Nigeria. Since 1982, Nigeria has experienced more than ten major ethnic or religious riots in major cities. Conflicts of various kinds in Nigeria have often been attributed to ethnicity. For instance, communal clashes, electoral violence and others have all been rooted in ethnicity. However, there is an indirect relationship between inter-party competition and ethnicity. What intervenes between ethnicity as independent variable and conflict as a dependent variable is the patrimonial character of the Nigerian state. These violent clashes have wreaked economic, political, and social havoc; caused an enormous number of deaths and injuries; posed serious obstacles to Nigeria's socio-political development as well as retard efforts at nation-building. This calls for utilization of all imaginable strategies including mobilization of ethnic solidarity by political elites. Ethnic acrimony engendered by one instance of mobilization keeps recurring in other instances to entrench inter-ethnic conflict. This paper examined inter-ethnic conflict in Nigeria: Implications for National Development and historical research method was adopted to achieve the objective of the paper. It was discovered that conflict is inevitable in any pluralistic society, but its negative impact should be guided against, while the positive is to be accentuated. Therefore, the paper concludes that government must address promptly and cautiously any crisis that is capable of engendering or fuelling violent conflict in the society.Item ISAIAH’S CONCEPT OF SALVATION AND ITS RELEVANCE TO AFRICAN CHRISTIAN THEOLOGY(Voyages: Journal of religious Studies, 2016-01-14) Ajetomobi, Olumuyiwa AduralereThe prophet Isaiah son of Amoz was one of the Old Testament prophets who ministered in the eight century. The content of his message can be summarized as focusing on sin and salvation. For Isaiah, as a result of the sin of the people of Israel and Judah, the judgment of Yahweh over them was inevitable. However, their salvation shall come from the Lord. Salvation in the context of Isaiah’s message connotes spiritual redemption and physical deliverance from their enemies. In other words, salvation and liberation goes together. Today, based on the colonial experience of different nations and the present situation of the economy of most African countries, the message of salvation (Spiritual) cannot be relevant to the Africans if divorced from liberation (physical). African Christian theology must then be able to meet both the spiritual and physical needs of Africans. The Christianity that came through the western missionaries has ended up in another form of slavery for Africans. In Africa, conversion to the Christian faith was introduced by the modern missionary movement as the inward or spiritual basis for acculturation into the Western way of life-the cultural heritage of those missionaries who came to evangelize African people. Today, there still remain reflections of Western culture in most churches in Africa especially in Nigeria. Also, in Africa today, the poor are still being oppressed by the rich, politics still remain a dirty game, corruption is still on the increase, and Africans still need liberation from the power of sin and social-political liberty. Historical and analytical method of approach was used to achieve the objective of this paper. This paper upholds the fact that, for the message of salvation to be relevant within the context of African Christian theology, it must not only concentrate on the spiritual life of the people but also their physical life, salvation must also mean liberation from poverty and the like. This paper thus applies Isaiah’s concept of salvation to African situation.Item The Roles of Clergy and Laity in Church Growth(Kaduna Journal of Humanities, A journal of the Department of History, 2017-10-16) Ajetomobi, Olumuyiwa Aduralere; Bello, Olajide EmmanuelChurch growth phenomenon has been well attended to from the early church era to this time. There are divergent opinions about when the church began. There is relatively strong consensus that Christian church began at Pentecost. The common features of the Christian church remain; the ministry of Jesus on earth, his disciples, the Pentecost experience and the spread of the gospel, beginning from Jerusalem to the Diaspora. The roles of the clergy and the laity cannot be overemphasized in Church growth. Church growth which incorporates increase in the number of disciples, spiritual, moral and social strength of the Christian brotherhood, priority of spirituality over money and materialism, commitment of converts’ lives and resources to God’s work, unity among believers etc. is made possible by the power of the Holy Spirit. The theoretical framework upon which this work is based is Floding’s theory of the universal priesthood of all believers; that there should be non-disparity between the clergy and laity. The research made use of historical method to trace the history of the church and her growth, exegetical method to explain some Hebrew and Greek terms from their original roots and analytical method to show the trend of the growth of the church in spite of challenges. It was discovered that for the church to grow fast and healthy the power of the Holy Spirit, thorough discipleship program and unity among believers are important factorsItem The Roles of Religious Leaders in the Sustainability of Democracy in Nigeria(Department of History, Kaduna State University, kaduna, 2018-06) Ajetomobi, Olumuyiwa AduralereAbstract Democracy is simply defined as the government of the people, by the people and for the people. With this assertion, true democracy is not obtainable as far as Nigeria is concerned. Corruption has eaten deep into the whole essence of democratic system in Nigeria today. The heroes of Democracy have put their best to sustain the democratic system but in a way have failed. The just concluded 2015 General Elections had an element of Democracy in which the immediate past President Ebele Jonathan conceded defeat after losing to the opposition Party. The roles of religious leaders have not been helpful to the democratic system in Nigeria. The focus of this paper is to examine the role of religious leaders in the sustainability of Democracy in Nigeria because the Political class is looking up to them for action, and one of the roles of those leaders is to pray for the people in government and to know the mind of God for them because it is an institution from God. The historical and analytic method would be adopted to achieve the aim of this paper. The real impact of the religious leaders would also be considered to achieve the real democratic sustainability in Nigeria. Conclusively, the paper gives democracy the real pride of place in the positive impact religious leaders would play in order for the democrats to achieve a sustainable democracy.
