    An assessment of predisposing factors of sexually transmitted diseases among secondary schools students in Ilorin Metropolis, Kwara State.

    The study assessed predisposing factors of sexually transmitted-diseases among secondary schools students in Ilorin metropolis, Kwara State. The population for the study comprises of all the secondary school students within Ilorin metropolis. Descriptive research design of survey method was adopted for the study. A multi stage sampling technique was used to select 200 respondents consisting mainly of secondary school students in Ilorin metropolis. A self designed structured questionnaire which was adequately validated and tested for reliability was used. In all, three (3) research hypotheses were formulated and tested at 0.05 alpha level of significance. The data collected were analysis using chi-square (x²) statistical method. The result of analysis revealed that unprotected sex predisposes secondary school students to sexually transmitted infections in Ilorin metropolis. Lack of adequate knowledge of causes of sexually transmitted diseases also serves as a predisposing factor of the infections among secondary schools students in. Ilorin metropolis. The study recommends that awareness and sensitization programme should be organized in order to educate the young people about sexually transmitted infections especially the secondary school students; government and non-governmental organization should mount campaign against pre-marital sex, unprotected sex and other health risk behaviour among secondary school students in Ilorin metropolis.

    Health workers perception of causes and prevention of drug abuse among people in Ilorin Metropolis, Kwara State

    This study examined health workers perception of causes and prevention of drug abuse among people in Ilorin Metropolis, Kwara State. The study population comprises of all people in Ilorin Metropolis, Kwara State. A stratified random sampling technique was used to select three hundreds (300) respondents mainly health workers used for the study. The main instrument used for collecting data for the study is researcher structured questionnaire which were validated and tested with the use of test re-test reliability method. A reliability correlation coefficient of 0.81 was obtained from the pilot test. In all, four (4) hypotheses were generated and tested with the use of chi-square (x²) statistical method at 0.05 alpha level of significance. The finding of the study revealed that peer pressure constitutes significant cause of drug abuse. Also, drug education has assisted in prevention of perceptual drug abuse. Based on this finding the study recommends that parents/Guardians should try as much as possible to guide the conducts and be observant of their wards. There should be effective drug education on harmful effects of drug abuse and misused.

    Implication of selected socio-cultural practices on reproductive health of women of childbearing age in rural areas of Oyo Town, Oyo State.

    This study examined the implication of some socio-cultural practices on the reproductive health of women of childbearing age in rural areas. Stratified random sampling was employed to select 368 respondents for the study; the instrument used was a self-structured and developed questionnaire, validated by experts in the field of community health, health education and reproductive health. The instrument was then pilot-tested twice with the use of split half method and a reliability coefficient.88r was obtained. Three research hypotheses were tested at 0.05 alpha level of significance and the data collected were analyzed by the use of chi-square statistics. The findings showed that early marriage and female genital mutilation have serious implications on reproductive health of respondents. It was therefore recommended that government and non-government organizations should embark on enlightenment campaigns and invest in reproductive health education for rural women.

    Pattern and health impact of solid waste management on residents in Atiba local government area of Oyo State

    This paper examined pattern and health impact of solid waste management on residents in Atiba local government area (LGA) of Oyo State. A stratified random sampling technique was used to select a sample population of 300 male and female residents in Atiba LGA, in the study. A structured questionnaire scruitinized by experts in the field of public health and environmental health was used for the study. A reliability value of 0.87 correlation coefficient was obtained with the use of test-retest method. Descriptive research survey was adopted. In all, three research hypotheses were formulated and tested at 0.05 alpha level of significance. Data collected were analyzed by the use of chi-square (x²) statistical method. The result of the study showed that residents of Atiba LGA adopted similar approach in their practicing of waste management. It was also revealed that residents in Atiba LGA expressed different opinions with respect to their understanding of health risks associated with unscientific waste management. Based on these findings, the study recommended that environmental health officers and other health workers should mount regular health education on hazards associated with improper disposal of waste products. It was also recommended that government should legislate against indiscriminate dumping of waste products.

    Primary health care providers knowledge of occupational blood hazards common to health care personnel in Oyo East Local Government Oyo State.

    This study examined health care providers' knowledge of occupational blood hazards common to medical personnel in Oyo East local government, Oyo State: A descriptive research design of survey type was adopted for the study. The population of study comprised all medical personnel from Oyo East local government, Oyo state. A multi-stage sampling technique was employed in selecting ninety (90) respondents used for the study. A researcher designed questionnaire that had been. validated by experts in medical field was used to collect data for the study. A test-re-test procedure was used to obtain the reliability coefficient of 0.81r. In all, four (4) research hypotheses were formulated and tested with the use of chi-square (x²) statistical method at 0.05 alpha level of significance. The result of analysis showed that primary health care providers have sound knowledge of prevailing blood hazards in health industries. However, primary health care providers' knowledge of factors associated with occupational exposure to blood hazards in health industries is not adequate. Based on these findings, the study recommends that general health care workers in PHC centres should acquire knowledge on factors associated with blood hazards in the health industry and strictly adhere to universal precautions. Also, government should organize in-house training on post-exposure prophylaxis which should be taken seriously and be done on regular basis.

    This paper examined the role of physical education and sports in achieving sustainable development. It examined contributions of physical education and sports in to social and economic development. Literature affirms that the way each individual lives is a major factor for the health and fitness of that person. Again, there are individuals that earn a living through sports. It is only when individuals are physically fit that they will be productive. Based on these and many more, it was recommended among others that, since individuals can be gainfully employed through sports, government should develop functional physical education and sports programmes that will assist individuals to contribute to social and economic development of the nation as this will offer ample opportunities and create economic opportunities.

    SOCIO-DEMOGRAPHIC VARIABLES AS DETERMINANTS OF SPORTS PARTICIPATION AMONG THE STAFF OF SUPPORT SERVICES UNITS, UNIVERSITY OF ILORIN.

    Active participation in sports will bring variety of profound and positive impact on mental and physical health benefits to individuals, university community and society at large. In spite of the benefits, there is a low sports participation among the staff of support services units, University of Ilorin. This paper therefore, investigated the socio-demographic variables (sports facilities’ location, age and gender) in sports participation among the staff of support services units, University of Ilorin, Ilorin, Nigeria. The population for the study comprised all 12 support services units with 2718 staff. Sample random sampling technique was used to select 15 respondents from each unit totaling 180 respondents, representing 6.6% of the total population. Self-development, structured, and validated questionnaire was used to test re-test method of reliability and 0.75ri was obtained. Data were analyzed using inferential statistic of PPMC and the findings revealed that three (3) hypotheses tested were significant. This implies that sport facilities’ location, age and gender, greatly contribute to sports participation among the staff of support services units. Based on the findings, the following conclusion was made, that access to sports infrastructure near their workplaces was associated with their participation in sports, and culture manifests itself in the gender order in society is mentioned by the different units both as a barrier for participation. It is upon these findings that it is recommended that the Department of Human Kinetics Education and Unilorin Sports Council work with the University’s management to look for ways of developing sports infrastructure close to workplaces which greatly affect sport participation and that themes related to sex, gender have a larger place in all spot development workshops and educational courses, independent of the target audience (Staff of support services Units, University of ilorin).

    Teachers' perception of impacts of reproductive health knowledge on prevention of teenage pregnancy and abortion among secondary school students in Oyo metropolis, Nigeria

    This study examined teachers' perception of impacts of reproductive health knowledge on prevention of teenage pregnancy and abortion among secondary school students in Oyo metropolis, Nigeria. Descriptive survey method was adopted for the study. The population of the study comprised of all public secondary school teachers in Oyo metropolis. Multi-stage sampling techniques was used to select three hundred and twenty (320) respondents used for the study. The instrument used to collect data used for the study was researchers structured questionnaire duly validated by experts in reproductive health. A correlation coefficient of 0.84 was obtained with the use of test-retest reliability method. In all, three research hypotheses were generated and tested with the use of chi-square statistical method at 0.05 alpha level of significance. The finding from the study shows that sources of secondary school reproductive knowledge have impact on prevention of teenage pregnancy. Also, secondary school students' reproductive health knowledge has impact on prevention of hazards associated with abortion. Based on these findings, the study recommends that education authority should endeavour to employ competent health education teachers to teach reproductive aspect of health.
