Abstract

This study examined health workers perception of causes and prevention of drug abuse among people in Ilorin Metropolis, Kwara State. The study population comprises of all people in Ilorin Metropolis, Kwara State. A stratified random sampling technique was used to select three hundreds (300) respondents mainly health workers used for the study. The main instrument used for collecting data for the study is researcher structured questionnaire which were validated and tested with the use of test re-test reliability method. A reliability correlation coefficient of 0.81 was obtained from the pilot test. In all, four (4) hypotheses were generated and tested with the use of chi-square (x²) statistical method at 0.05 alpha level of significance. The finding of the study revealed that peer pressure constitutes significant cause of drug abuse. Also, drug education has assisted in prevention of perceptual drug abuse. Based on this finding the study recommends that parents/Guardians should try as much as possible to guide the conducts and be observant of their wards. There should be effective drug education on harmful effects of drug abuse and misused.
