Item Influence of parenting styles on junior secondary school students’ performance in social studies in Ilorin emirate(2009) Yusuf, AbdulRaheem; Agbonna, Ayorinde; Yusuf, HamdallatThe purpose of the study was to investigate the influence of parenting styles on junior secondary school students' performance in social studies in Ilorin Emirate, Nigeria. The study used questionnaire and proforma to collect data on parenting styles and students'perfonnance. The data onjunior school certificate and parenting styles were analysed using frequency count, percentages and chi- square to answer the research questions and test the hypotheses raised in the study. The results showed that the parenting styles adopted had influence on the perfonnance ofthe students. In addition, it was observed that studentsfrom authoritative parenting had better performance than studentsfrom otherparenting styles. It was recommended among others thatparents should adopt authoritative parenting style to enhance optimalperfonnance ofthe students. In addition, the school should create structures and strengthen the existing ones that would provide parent training intervention.Item Institutional discrimination and the optimism of Nigerian fresh graduates about chances of employment(2009) Agbonna, Ayorinde; Yuus, AbdulRaheem; Yusuf, HamdallatThis study is a survey ofNigerianfresh graduates' optimism about getting employed and the institutional discriminatoryfactors they envisaged might work against their bid to get employed. Stratified random sampling technique was used to sample 548 corps members at the NYSC camp in Ilorin, Kwara State. Data were analyzed using percentages and chi-square statistics. Findings revealed that a high percentage ofNigerianfresh graduates (85.52%) were not optimistic about getting employed. Also, a high percentage of them (75.52 0/0) believed they would be discriminated against in the world- of- work on the ground of inadequate political power. However, using chi-square statistic, it was discovered that respondents' optimism differed across gender. Thus, it was recommended among other things that Nigerian government need to eradicate all forms of institutional discrimination so as to be able to tap the potentials of its youthful populationto the maximum level.
