    AN APPRAISAL OF ONLINE GAMBLING ON UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN UNIVERSITY OF ILORIN, ILORIN, NIGERIA

    The convergence of gambling and ICT has meaningful implications for gambling among youths most especially students as ICT makes the play and practice of gambling increasingly familiar and easily accessible to ICT users. Most University students are youths and ICT savvy and are prone to get lured into online gambling practice hence the study examined the influence of online gambling on academic performance among the University of Ilorin students. The study adopted a descriptive survey method. The sample of the study was 199 undergraduate students. Responses from the questionnaire were analyzed and findings revealed that over 50% students have performance that qualifies them for a second-class lower degree; students averred to online gambling; and there was a significant relationship between undergraduates’ attitude towards online gambling and academic performance in school. From the findings, it was concluded that students’ online gambling has eroded the time needed to study, increases their stress level through anxiety and ultimately affected their performance through cumulative grade point average. It was therefore recommended that university authority should monitor online gambling participation through blockage of websites that promote online gambling, amongst others

    PRE-SERVICE TEACHERS AWARENESS OF THE USE OF SOCIAL MEDIA FOR LEARNING IN KWARA STATE, NIGERIA

    This study investigated the awareness and use of social media by students in Colleges of Education (COE) in Ilorin, Kwara State, Nigeria. The study was a descriptive research of the survey type. 200 students from the institutions responded to the questionnaire designed to elicit responses regarding the purposes of the study. Frequency count, percentage and t-test were used to analyze the data. The results indicated that colleges of education students were aware of and use social media for learning. Also, colleges of education students interact with and assimilated faster when using Social Media and this influences colleges of education students learning style. There was no significant difference in the awareness of colleges of education students based on gender and, gender does not influence colleges of education students’ use of social media. The study concluded that COE students in Ilorin have ample awareness about the use of social media for learning and that the lecturers’ role would be to guide the application to learning. It was recommended that the use of social media in teaching and learning in Colleges of Education be encouraged and adequately monitored to avoid abuse.

    Undergraduates’ perception on the use of e-learning management system to study in Ilorin, Kwara State

    The application of Information and Communication Technology in teaching is a relevant and functional way of providing education to learners that will assist to inculcate the required capacity for the world of work. Hence, Learning Management Systems are solutions built and integrated into education to facilitate delivery of learning instructions to the learners. This study, therefore, explored undergraduates’ perception of the use of learning management system to study in Ilorin, Kwara state. University of Ilorin was purposively selected as the target location because the institution has a dedicated learning management system built to deliver one of her core courses for all 300 level students- GNS 312. The questionnaire was utilized to obtain data from 100 undergraduates from five faculties in the University. The findings revealed that most respondents had a positive perception of the usefulness and ease of use of LMS to learn GNS 312 in University of Ilorin. The students also expressed satisfaction at this mode of delivery of the lesson. The study concludes that undergraduates in Ilorin, Kwara State have a positive perception of the utilization of LMS because they are satisfied with it. The study thereby recommended that GNS 312 should remain on the platform of LMS because undergraduates see its usefulness; they find it easy to use, learn effectively with it and are satisfied with it.

    Upper Basic Students’ Attitude towards Utilization of a Mobile Application for Learning among Basic Technology Students in Nigeria

    In spite of the advancements in technological growth, learners are still subjected to physical classroom conditions characterized by rigidity. However, learners can leverage on mobile technologies to receive curriculum-based instructions irrespective of distance and time. Hence, this study developed a mobile application for learning selected basic technology concepts in Nigerian Upper Basic Schools using the conceptualized ASDDURE (Analysis, Statement of Objectives, Design, Development, Utilization, Response and Evaluation) Model. The objectives of the study therefore were to: (i) examine the attitude of upper basic school students to utilization of the mobile application and (ii) examine the difference in male and female students‟ attitude to utilization of the mobile application. The study was conducted using descriptive research of the survey type. The study population comprises of all Nigerian upper basic school specifically upper basic school two students. 27 students in upper basic school two were purposively selected based on access to smartphones. A research-designed questionnaire was used to elicit data from respondents. The research instrument as tested for reliability using Cronbach alpha with value 0.83. Mean and t-test were used for data analysis of research questions and hypothesis with 2.5 as benchmark mean. Research hypothesis was tested at 0.05 level of significance. The findings of the study indicated that, students had positive attitude towards utilization of the mobile app with a grand mean of 3.31, there was no significant difference in the attitude of male and female basic technology students towards utilization of the developed mobile application (t= 0.26, p>0.05). The study concluded that students have positive attitude on the use of educational mobile application for learning. Hence, the study recommended learning contents should be deployed via mobile applications in order to encourage learning of basic technology.
