Item Assessment of fresh and returning undergraduates’ attitudes towards learning of Social Studies in University of Ilorin, Nigeria(Arts and Social Sciences Education Department, Faculty of Education, Al-Hikmah University Ilorin, Nigeria, 2020-06) Olokooba, I. N.; Abdulsalam, A. A.This study examined fresh and returning undergraduates' attitudes towards learning of Social Studies in University of Ilorin, Nigeria. 100 level and 400 level students were sampled as the fresh and returning Social Studies undergraduates respectively using quota sampling technique. A researcher self-developed questionnaire was used for data collection while data collected were analysed using percentage. Mean was used to answer research questions while hypothesis was tested using Chi-square at 0.05 significance level. Findings of the study revealed that fresh undergraduates have positive attitude towards learning of Social Studies; returning undergraduates also have positive attitude towards learning Social Studies; and there was no significant difference between fresh and returning undergraduates’ attitudes toward learning of Social Studies in the university. It was therefore concluded that there was no significant difference between fresh and returning undergraduate attitudes towards learning of Social Studies in the university. It was therefore recommended that emphasize should be laid on affective domain purposely to enhance learning and internalization of its contents in order to foster positive attitudes in Social Studies students.Item ASSESSMENT OF UNDERGRADUATE TEACHER TRAINEES’ AWARENESS OF SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS(Association of Sociologists of Education in Nigeria, 2017-10) Okunloye, R. W.; Olokooba, I. N.; Abdulsalam, A. A.The paper assessed the undergraduate teacher trainees’ awareness of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The study mainly examined the awareness of undergraduate teacher trainees on perception, objectives, conceptual and operational framework of SDGs. The population of the study comprised University of Ilorin undergraduate teacher trainees. Descriptive survey design was employed in the study and a questionnaire titled “Undergraduate teacher trainees’ Awareness of Sustainable Development Goals (UASDGs)” was administered to five hundred (500) students but only 467 were returned and were used. Three research questions were raised and answered using percentage. Two null hypotheses were tested using t-test statistic at 0.05 level of significance. The result of the study showed that majority of undergraduate teacher trainees were not aware of the relationship between MDGs and SDGs identified in this study, they were only aware of MDGs which were developed for actualization in 15 years and they were aware of SDGs’ objectives. Findings also showed that majority of the undergraduate teacher trainees were not aware of the conceptual and operational platform of SDGs. The findings revealed that a significant difference exists between male and female, and Arts and Social Sciences Education undergraduate teacher trainees’ awareness of SDGs. Based on the findings, it was recommended that SDGs should be introduced to the curriculum content of the university education and citizenship education and Strategies and techniques should be involved in the awareness of the undergraduate teacher trainees to enable them work towards actualization of the goals.Item Attitude and preference of junior secondary school students to Civic Education in Ilorin Metropolis(Social Sciences Education Department, Faculty of Education, University of Ilorin, Ilorin, Nigeria, 2019-06) Abdulsalam, A. A.; Okunloye, R. W.; Oparinde, F. O.The study examined attitude and preference of junior and senior secondary school students to Civic Education in Ilorin Metropolis. The study adopted descriptive study. The study was carried out in ten purposely selected secondary schools in Ilorin, Kwara State. 200 Secondary Students both male and female with age differences were randomly selected as samples for investigation. Data for the study were collected through a questionnaire designed by the researcher to obtain information based on the categorization of students’ attitude and preference. The data for the study were analyzed using mean, standard deviation and t-test Statistics. The null hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. Findings of the study revealed that majority of the respondents’ attitude to Civic Education among secondary school students in Ilorin metropolis were positive. Findings of the study also revealed that majority of the respondents’ have high preference for Civic Education among secondary school students in Ilorin metropolis. Finding revealed that there was a significant difference in the attitude to and preference for Civic Education among secondary school students in Ilorin metropolis. Findings revealed that there was no significant difference in the attitude of male and female to Civic Education among secondary school students in Ilorin metropolis. Findings also reviewed that there was no significant difference in the preference for Civic Education among secondary school male and female students in Ilorin metropolis. Recommendations made include: Civic Education should be integrated into the Nigerian teacher education programme and in-service training on civic and political matters should be done through regular seminars and workshops based on the findings of the study.Item Availability and use of computer-based instructional materials (CIM) by upper basic Social Studies teachers in Ilorin, Nigeria(Educational Technology Department, Faculty of Education, University of Ilorin, Ilorin, Nigeria., 2016) Olokooba, I. N.; Abdulsalam, A. A.Teachers are the most important agents for the successful implementation of educational programme. They play vital roles on educational innovations and their application in teaching and learning process to assist learners in the acquisition of concrete and rewarding school experience, Social Studies teachers are not exception. This study examined teacher variables and use of Computer Assisted Instructional Materials (CAIM) in Upper Basic Social Studies in Kwara State. A descriptive survey research design was adopted. The population for this study covered all upper basic social studies teachers in Kwara State. Sample for this study comprised 150 respondents sampled through a stratified random sampling technique. The instrument was a questionnaire titled “Computer Assisted Instructional Materials in Social Studies Assessment Checklist (CAIMSSAC)” with a reliability 0f 0.83. The data collected were analysed using percentage for the research questions while hypotheses were tested using t-test statistic. The findings of the study showed that CAIM are not frequently used by Social Studies teachers for instructional purposes. Only computer systems are occasionally used for information processing and storage. The study revealed that there is no statistically significant different between male and female (t=0.12, p>0.05), qualified and unqualified teachers (t=0.02, p>0.05), and experienced and less experienced Social Studies teachers (t=0.27, p>0.05) on the use of CAIM. Based on these findings, it was recommended that teachers should be encouraged to be computer literate and frequently use CAIM for teaching. Regular workshops, seminars, and in-service training should be organised to improve teachers’ efficiency on the usage of CAIM.Item CAUSES AND EFFECTS OF CORRUPT PRACTICES IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS AS PERCEIVED BY STAKEHOLDERS IN KWARA STATE(Social Studies Association of Nigeria, 2018-10) Olokooba, I. N.; Abdulsalam, A. A.Corruption has permeated almost all facets of human endeavours with no exception to the educational sector in which secondary schools are integral parts of the sector. This paper assessed causes and effects of corrupt practices in secondary schools in Kwara State. The study mainly examined the forms, causes, effects and preventive measures of tackling corrupt practices in secondary schools and human society. The population of the study was comprised of all secondary school students, teachers and parents in the state. Sample for this study consisted 115 respondents selected through a stratified random sampling technique. Forty-five students, 40 teachers and 30 parents were sampled using stratified sampling technique. Descriptive survey design was employed and a questionnaire titled “Causes and Effects of Corrupt practices in Secondary Schools Questionnaire” (CECSSQ) with a reliability index of 0.78 was used for data collection. Four research questions were raised and answered using mean and standard deviation. The result of the study showed that parents, teachers and students agreed that parents involved in giving out money to influence their children results; illegal deduction of staff salaries and illegal additional charges on school fees are the prominent forms of corrupt practices in secondary schools. The prominent causes of corrupt practices in the secondary schools are lack of students’ poor attitude towards learning and reading predisposes them to cheat and engage in corrupt practices. More so, poor remunerations which do induce teachers to collect bribe from students. Corrupt practices have effects on academic standard, qualitative education and facilities in the schools. Based on these findings, it was recommended among other that more emphasis should be given to moral education and character development in secondary schools in the country.Item CURBING STUDENTS’ DEVIANT BEHAVIOUR THROUGH THE TEACHING OF VALUE AND MORAL EDUCATION IN OSUN STATE(Social Science Education Department, Faculty of Education, Ekiti State University, Ado Ekiti, Nigeria, 2018) Oparinde, F. O.; Abdulsalam, A. A.Deviant behaviour is an anti-social behaviour that is opposed or contrary to normal social instincts or practices, and a violation of social relationship. Deviance is found everywhere people live. Hence, this paper investigated the relationship between values/moral education and deviant behaviours among Secondary School Students in Osun State, Nigeria. This study is descriptive in nature and as a result, survey method of data collection was employed. The population for the study consisted of all Secondary Schools, teachers and students in Osun State across the thirty Local Government Areas in the State. Simple random sampling technique was used to select seventy five Secondary Schools across fifteen of the existing thirty Local Government Areas in the State at five schools per Local Government Area. Five participating respondents were drawn from each of the schools in the fifteen Local Government Areas of the State and a total number of 375 respondents were considered. One main instrument tagged “Students Deviant Behaviours and the Teaching of Moral and Value Education” (SDBTMVE) was constructed for the study. Three research questions were raised while three hypotheses were formulated and tested at 0.05 level of significance. The questions were answered using frequency counts, mean and standard deviation, while Pearson Product-Moment Correlation Analysis statistical tools were used to test the hypotheses. The study identified the various causes of deviant behaviour as lack of good governance, greed on the part of the youth, drug abuse, inadequate communication and understanding with parents and lack of self-esteem. It was, therefore, recommended among others, that moral and values education should be included in the curricular of post-secondary education irrespective of discipline or course of study. This will humanize students at this level of training and help to reduce cultism and armed robberies as well as other campus and societal vices.Item EFFECT OF COMPUTER ASSISTED INSTRUCTIONAL PACKAGE ON UPPER BASIC STUDENTS’ PERFORMANCE IN SOCIAL STUDIES IN KWARA STATE, NIGERIA(Social Studies Association of Nigeria, 2019-10) Olokooba, I. A.Computer Assisted Instructional Package is an innovative and interactive instructional technique of using computers in carrying out teaching and learning activities in the classroom situations. This study examined the effect of Computer Assisted Instructional Package on Upper Basic Social Studies students’ performance in Kwara State, Nigeria. Quasi-experimental study involving 2x2x2 non-randomized and non-equivalent pretest-posttest control groups research design was adopted. A simple random sampling technique was used to select two intact classes, one was an experimental group, the other was a control group. The instruments used were Computer Assisted Instructional Package and Social Studies Performance Tests. Their reliability coefficients were 0.78 and 0.76 respectively. The findings of the study revealed that the mean performance of upper basic students exposed to the package was high. There was a significant effect of the package on upper basic students’ performance in Social Studies (F=18.920, P>0.000); there was no significant interaction effect of gender, school mode and the package on upper basic students’ performance in Social Studies. Based on the findings, it was recommended that Computer Assisted Instructional Package should be used in teaching Social Studies to enhance students’ performance in schools and that the gender friendliness of Social Studies should be sustained.Item Effects of concept-mapping on students’ performance in environmental education-related secondary school subjects’ in Ilorin, Nigeria.(Collaboration of Education Faculties in West Africa (CEFWA), 2013) Okunloye, R. This study examined the impacts of evaluation techniques on effective implementation of upper basic Social Studies curriculum in Kwara State. The specific objectives of this study were to investigate the extent of using as well as the impacts of evaluation techniques on the effective implementation of upper basic Social Studies curriculum. A descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The population of the study was all basic students in the state. Three local government were selected using stratified random sampling technique based on senatorial district. Simple random sampling technique was employed to select twenty-five upper basic schools in each local government areas in the state. A.; Oparinde, O.This study was undertaken to examine the importance of job satisfaction and its influence on Organisational Citizenship Behaviour (OCB) in Osun State-owned tertiary institutions with a view to examining the relationship between OCB and improved organisational performance and also the relationship between job satisfaction and organisational effectiveness. A survey method of a correlative type was employed to achieve the research objectives. The researchers designed a questionnaire named Organisational Citizen Behaviour and Employees’ Job Satisfaction (OCBEJS) which was used to measure job satisfaction and staff commitment in relation to OCB and this was administered to 200 staff members selected from the Osun State Colleges of Education in Ila-Orangun and Ilesa, as well as Osun State Polytechnic, Iree and Osun State College of Technology, Esa-Oke using a simple random sampling technique. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics. Research questions were answered using frequency counts and tables, while the hypotheses were tested using the Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient at a .05 level of significance. Findings revealed that job satisfaction is very important in determining citizenship behaviours at the selected institutions. It was therefore recommended that participation in OCB could be encouraged by giving priority to all factors influencing employee job satisfaction at the selected institutions.Item Prospective teachers’ awareness of teacher certification for quality assurance in Nigerian education system.(Educational Management Department, Faculty of Education, University of Ilorin, Ilorin, Nigeria, 2020) Olokooba, I. L.Teaching profession is adequately certified, regulated and licensed by Teacher Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) to ensure quality and standard in the system. The prospective teachers of teacher educational institutions are important stakeholders trained to facilitate and enhance the effective teaching and learning processes in the in the classrooms but how far are the teachers aware of teacher certification. It becomes imperative to assess prospective teachers’ awareness of teacher certification for quality assurance in the education system. The objectives of the study were to investigate prospective teachers’ awareness of teacher certification, obligations of teachers under TRCN and, rights and privileges of registered teachers with TRCN for quality assurance in the sector. A descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. Stratified random sampling technique was employed to select three hundred students in teacher educational institutions in Kwara State. A researcher-designed questionnaire was used for data collection. The data collected were analysed using percentage and means ranking. The findings of the study showed that prospective teachers had low level of awareness on the activities of the TRCN towards teacher certification, obligations of teachers registered under TRCN as well as rights and privileges of registered teachers with TRCN for quality assurance in the education system. Based on the findings, it was recommended among others that procedures and processes of teacher certification should be integrated into teacher education for prospective teachers to have adequate information and enlightenment about the professionalism.Item Role of traditional rulers in conflict resolution for sustainable democracy in Nigeria.(Social Studies Association of Nigeria, 2020-04) Abdulsalam, A. A.; Olokooba, I. N.; Okafor, I. P.; Adika, A. C.This research examined the roles of traditional rulers in conflict resolution in Kwara State, Nigeria. The study population consisted of traditional rulers in the state. The study adopted a descriptive survey type, 180 members of traditional rulers were sampled through simple random sampling technique. The researchers’ designed questionnaire titled Roles of Traditional Rulers in Conflict Resolution Questionnaire was used as an instrument to elicit data from the respondents. The findings of the study showed that traditional rulers had many roles they play in conflict resolution in all ramifications. The study also revealed that there was no significant difference in the roles of traditional rulers in conflict resolution based on age and marital status. Based on the findings of the study, it was therefore, recommended that traditional rulers in the state should be familiar with the issues that are germane among individuals, social groups as well as providing the possible resolution to any conflict among them in the state purposely to enhance and facilitate sustainable democracy in the society.Item SELF-CONCEPT AND ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF UPPER BASIC SECONDARY SCHOOL SOCIAL STUDIES STUDENTS IN KWARA STATE, NIGERIA(Social Studies Association of Nigeria, 2013-10) Abdulsalam, A. A.; Jimoh, M. I.; Rasheed, S. A.The study examined Self-concept and academic performance of Upper basic secondary school Social Studies students in Kwara State, Nigeria. The study employed descriptive survey design. The population for this study consisted of students of Social Studies in public Upper Basic Schools in Kwara State and the sample for the study consisted of schools that had been presenting candidates for Junior School Certificate Examination (JSCE). The result showed that there was a significant relationship between self-concept and the academic performance of Social Studies students (r=.427). The study concluded that the factors determining the formation of the self-concept of an individual are: the environment, the people with whom the individual lives and who plays a very crucial role in the molding of individual's behaviours.Item Social Studies Educators Perceptions of Retrogression in Family Values as Source of Civil Unrest in North-central, Nigeria(Department of Educational Foundations, University of Ilorin, Ilorin, Nigeria, 2016) Rasheed, S. I.This paper is descriptive research, examined the Social Studies educators' perceptions of retrogression in family values as a source of civil unrest in North-central Nigeria. The populations for this study comprised Social Studies Educators in North-Central Nigeria.150 Social Studies Educators were randomly sampled in tertiary institutions offering Social Studies education in North-Central, Nigeria. The main instrument used to obtain data in this study was the researchers’ designed questionnaire. Four research questions and two research hypotheses were formulated. Data collected were collated and analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, mean ranking and t-test. Based on the findings of this study; the first three foremost perceived retrogression in family value that predisposed youth to civil unrest in North Central Nigeria are high rates of divorce and single parenthood with mean score of 3.80, changes in family roles and children exposition to peer group and mass media with mean score of 3.66 as well as the use of physical force to instill discipline in children with mean score of 3.63. The study thus recommended that marital disputes that would lead to divorce should be avoided, parent should also have adequate attention for their children despite their involvement in white-collar jobs. Moral talks and counseling approaches should be used instead of corporal punishment to enforce discipline.Item UNDERGRADUATES’ PERCEPTION ON TRANSPORTATION ISSUES IN THE NIGERIAN PUBLIC UNIVERSITIES(Department of Human Kinetics and Health Education, Faculty of Education, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Nigeria., 2020-03) Abdulsalam, A. A.; Olokooba, I. N.Students of public universities face many challenges of transportation issues which affect their well-being. The study investigated undergraduates’ perception of transport issues in public universities in Nigeria. The study adopted descriptive study design. The sample of the study was undergraduates in public universities in four selected states in South-west in Nigeria using simple random sampling technique. The instrument employed for data collection was self-structured questionnaire tagged “Undergraduates’ Perception on Transport Issues in Public Universities Questionnaire (UPTIPUQ)”. The data collected were analysed using descriptive statistics of mean and rank order to answer the research questions. Finding revealed that major problems of transportation issues in public universities in Nigeria as perceived by undergraduates was the limited available buses/cars in the school. The finding also revealed that major causes, effects and solutions to transportation issues were the limited available cabs/buses, spending long hours at the school park to board cabs/buses make undergraduates get home late and affected their learning activities. It was recommended that means of increasing transport service should be explored. Ensuring the punctuality of the students for lectures rests on the brief and cogent university transport strategy and policy in the university communities.
