Item Assessment of Educational and Social Needs of Internally Displaced Persons in Kaduna, Nigeria(Faculty of Education, University of Port Harcourt-Nigeria, 2016) Abdulrasaq Olatunji, BALOGUN; M.I., Jimoh; I. P., Okafor; A.O., Iyekolo; I., AzizThis study was a survey of educational and skill acquisition needs of internally displaced persons in Kaduna, Nigeria. The population for the study comprised all internally displaced persons in Kaduna State. Researchers purposively sample 200 internally displaced person seeking asylum in Mando Hajj camp in Kaduna, Nigeria. Researchers designed a questionnaire was used to elicit information from the respondents. The finding of the study reveals that many of respondents sampled demanded the free cost of education at all levels, issuance of enrolment documents to facilitate the enrolment of school-age children. The study also revealed that displaced persons need to acquire skills in various vocations so as to enable them to cater to their needs and give up restiveness. The study, therefore, recommended that the government should make education free for the displaced school-age persons and also establish vocational training school in the displaced person camp.Item Causes and Management Strategies of Violent Activities in Tertiary Education Institutions in North-Central Nigeria(The New Educational Review, 2018) I., Abdulaziz; A.O., Iyekolo; Abdulrasaq Olatunji, BALOGUNThe presented descriptive study involved three hundred and sixty-five (365) lecturers and one thousand one hundred and sixty-two (1,162) students selected from twelve (12) tertiary education institutions spread across North-Central Nigeria, making a thousand five hundred and twenty-seven (1,527) respondents for the study. The main instrument used to obtain data for this study was adapted questionnaire, two research questions and three hypotheses were formulated. The hypotheses were tested using the t-test statistical technique at 0.05 level of significance. A descriptive survey was adopted for the research. A total of 500 students participated in the study. Two research questions were answered and one hypothesis was tested at 0.05 level of significance. Percentage and Multiple Regression Analysis were the statistical tools employed to answer research questions and testing hypothesis. The finding of the study revealed that the emotional intelligence of the students was moderate, while the parental involvement in the students' career aspiration was too high. Also, the finding revealed that there was a significant relationship among emotional intelligence, parental involvement and career aspirations of the students. based on the findings of the study, it was recommended that school administrators should ensure that they set up a conducive learning environment for their students as this would, in turn, enhance better academic performance and they would achieve better academic performance and they would be able to achieve their career aspirations. Also, there is a need for parents to pay attention to the development of emotional intelligence of their children. Public school teachers and administrators should pay more attention to their students' emotional intelligence.Item Factors Hindering Participation of Illiterate Women in Non-formal Education in Kwara State, Nigeria(Faculty of Education, University of Port Harcourt-Nigeria, 2017) I., Abdulaziz; Y.O., Abdulraheem; Abdulrasaq Olatunji, BALOGUNAcross the globe, school is regarded as a safe place for children. This is an important aspect that is put into consideration when parents entrust their children to teachers. However, schools are not entirely a safe haven for children. On this basis, this study examined the opinion of teachers on the prevalence, causes and prevention strategies of violence against girls in Lagos schools, Nigeria. The study adopted a descriptive survey method and employed a multi-stage sampling technique to select 384 teachers from 128 senior secondary schools in Lagos State, Nigeria. The mean rating was used for the three research questions raised in this study. A researchers’-designed questionnaire was used as the instrument and tagged Violence against School Girls’ Forms, Factors and Prevention (VASGFFP) with a content and face validity and reliability index of 0.78. Findings revealed that sexual assault, obligatory chores for teachers, rape, verbal abuse and corporal punishment are the major types of violence against girls. It also revealed that lack of parental attention as a result of a broken home, poverty, school rules that permit the use of corporal punishment are the major causes of violence against girls in schools. Findings also revealed that symposium against the use of violence against girls, the introduction of curriculum content on violence against girls and the involvement of Parents Teachers Association is the major prevention strategies identified by teachers. The objectives of the study were to: (i) The perception of University of Ilorin Faculty of Education Lecturers on the causes of educated youth unemployment in Nigeria (ii) The perception of University of Ilorin Faculty of Education Lecturers on the social implications of educated youth unemployment in Nigeria. (iii) Whether there is any difference in the perception of males and females Faculty of Education Lecturers on the causes of educated youth unemployment in Nigeria. and (iv) Whether there is any difference in the perception of males and females Faculty of Education Lecturers on the social implications of educated youth unemployment in Nigeria. The descriptive research design of the survey type was used in this study. Four research questions were raised and two hypotheses were tested. The populations for the study comprised all lecturers in the University of Ilorin while target population was lecturers in the faculty of education, university of Ilorin. All 99 available Faculty of Education Lecturers in the University of Ilorin were used as respondents in the study. The questionnaire titled University Staff Perception of the Causes and Social implications of Educated Youth Unemployment Questionnaire (USPCASEYUQ) was used to elicit information from the respondents. The validity of the was ensured through face validity approach. Test re-test method of reliability was used to test the reliability of the instrument and the coefficient value of 0.63r was obtained. The data collected were analyzed using percentage, mean, standard deviation and t-test statistics. The findings of the study revealed that outdated school curricula and lack of employable skills, too much emphasis on University certificates, neglect of skill acquisition training and lack of equal educational opportunities were the major causes of educated youth unemployment in Nigeria. Findings also revealed that an increase in insecurity, reduction in incentives for school completion and civil disorder were identified as the major implications of educated youth unemployment in Nigeria. The study, therefore, recommended that government should provide employment opportunities for teaming educated unemployed youths and the ability of the government to review the educational policies and curriculum in such a way that will afford the youths the opportunity to meet up with the dire needs of employers and make them be self-reliant.Item Opinion of Teachers on the forms, Factors and Prevention of Violence against Girls in Secondary Schools in Lagos, Nigeria(Department of Educational Management, University of Ilorin, Nigeria, 2014) I., Abdulaziz; Abdulrasaq Olatunji, BALOGUN; A.O., IyekoloItem Parental Entrepreneurial Experience and Peer Group Influence As Predictors of Entrepreneurial Intentions of Undergraduates in University of Ilorin(Department of Sciences Education , University of Ilorin, 2017) Abdulrasaq Olatunji, BALOGUN; R.K., Oniye; I., Abdulaziz; I.N., Olokooba; G, MuhammedM.F.Unemployment has been seen as one of the problems bedevilling Nigeria society in recent times. This has the attention of different stakeholders in the country majorly on how it can be reduced to a notable level if not totally eradicated. Most of the concerned stakeholders came into a conclusion that the menace was due to graduates’ lack of business ideas. Hence this study carried out the investigation on social factors as predictors of entrepreneurial intention among undergraduates in the University of Ilorin. The objectives of the study were to: (i) find out the extent of entrepreneurial intentions of undergraduates in University of Ilorin; (ii) the influence of parents’ entrepreneurial experience on entrepreneurial intentions of undergraduates in University of Ilorin; and (iii) the peer group influence on entrepreneurial intentions of undergraduates in University of Ilorin. The descriptive research method of the survey type was adopted by this research. Three research questions were raised and one hypothesis was postulated and tested. 256 respondents out of 1,298 undergraduates that offered GSE 301 (Graduate Entrepreneurship) during 2015/2016 academic session were sampled using, Multistage sampling technique involving simple random, proportional and stratified random sampling techniques were used to select the respondents. A researcher designed a questionnaire titled, Social Predictors of Entrepreneurial Intention (SOPEI) was used to collect data from the respondents. The data collected were analyzed using percentage and Multiple Regression Statistics. The findings of the study revealed that undergraduates in the University of Ilorin had high entrepreneurial intentions. It was also revealed that Parents’ entrepreneurial experience and Peer group influence are good predictors of the entrepreneurial intention of undergraduates at the University of Ilorin. It was recommended among others that parents should be wary of friends that their children are keeping as this could make or mar their entrepreneurial intentions. The ex-post facto research design was employed for this study. The population of this study consisted of all the senior secondary school certificate geography candidates in the public schools in Ilorin metropolis while the target population comprised all candidates who sat for both the WAEC and NECO geography SSCE in 2011/2012 and 2012/2013 academic sessions. Ten public Senior Secondary Schools were randomly sampled. A total of five thousand eight hundred and eighty- four (5, 884) candidates results that sat for the WAEC and NECO Geography SSCE for the academic session 2011/2012 and 2012/2013 in Ilorin metropolis were considered. Proforma and questionnaire were used to collect data. Analysis of data was carried out using Pearson Product Moment Correlation (PPMC) statistic to test the two hypotheses postulated at the alpha level of 0.05. The findings revealed that there were the low positive and moderate relationship in both hypotheses tested between School-Based Assessment and the students' performance in WAEC and NECO Geography SSCE respectively. Based on these findings, it was recommended that teachers and officers in the examination bodies indicted in manipulating school-Based assessment scores should be regarded as saboteur and be made to face the same charges like those that engaged in examination malpractice.Item Social Deprivations and Access to Life-Saving Facilities Among Tertiary Students in Ilorin, Kwara State(Department of Publishing and Web Development, University of Education, Winneba, Ghana, 2017) I. P., Okafor; Abdulrasaq Olatunji, BALOGUN; I, Abdulaziz; A.O.., IyekoloThe study empirically finds out incidences, causes and impacts of social deprivation among undergraduates in public and private universities in Ilorin, Kwara State. From the population of undergraduates in the three randomly selected federal, state and private universities located in the state capital, random sampling technique was used to sample a total of 645 respondents out of which only 409 said they felt socially deprived. Data was collected using a questionnaire instrument which had four sections. The collected data were analyzed using percentages. Findings show that 65.36% of undergraduates in federal university, 81.81% of that in-state university and 40.21% of the private university of the three types of the university said they had been deprived against in all areas of their lives. Specifically, the study determined the influence of teaching qualification, years of teaching experience, areas of specialization and gender on teachers’ effectiveness. The population of the study was 3,410 Upper basic teachers in the 84 schools in the district out of which 300 teachers were randomly drawn from 30 schools as the sample for the study. A questionnaire titled My Teacher Effectiveness Inventory (MTEI) was used to collect data about the teachers’ effectiveness from their students. The collected data were analyzed with percentage and chi squares. The findings showed that teachers in Basic Schools possess the minimum teaching qualification. Teachers’ gender, teaching qualifications, years of teaching experience and area of specialization significantly influenced their effectiveness. Based on these findings, it was recommended that B.Ed/B. Sc/B. A. (Ed. should be the least qualification for teaching in Upper Basic schools in Kwara Central Senatorial District. The experienced teachers should mentor the less experienced and newly recruited teachers; teachers area of specialization or discipline should be adhere to in recruitment and placement of teachers. Also, male teachers should update their knowledge through series of in-service training and refresher courses. These would improve teachers’ effectiveness and standard in Basic Education would be assured.Item VALUES PRIORITIES AND IN-SCHOOL ADOLESCENT LIFESTYLES IN ILORIN METROPOLIS, NIGERIA(Department of Social Sciences Educational, University of Ilorin, 2019) Abdulrasaq Olatunji, BALOGUN; A.F., Sambo; G.M.F., MuhammedValue is the important concept in human society as it has the tendency to affects the attitude, behaviour, the choice of career and the decisions we make almost every day. The behaviours we showcase or exhibit in everyday life are the reflections of beliefs and value we held. This study, therefore, was conducted on the correlation between values priorities and in-school adolescent lifestyles in Ilorin Metropolis, Nigeria. The research design adopted was the descriptive survey of correlational type. The population for the study was all in-school adolescents in Ilorin Metropolis, Nigeria. A total number of three hundred (300) in-school adolescents were sampled for this study using a simple random sampling technique. A researcher’ designed questionnaire was used for data collection while the data collected were analysed using mean and standard deviation to answer the research questions and Pearson Product Moment Correlation (PPMC) was used to test the hypothesis postulated at 0.05 level of significance. Findings from this study revealed that achievement, self-direction, security, power, stimulation, hedonism, and conformity were the values prioritized and considered most important among in-school adolescents in Ilorin Metropolis, Nigeria. However, values such as tradition, benevolence and universalism were considered less important compared to others; it was discovered that majority of in-school adolescents always engage in cognitive orientation, family-sentimental style, hedonistic orientation and orientation to popularity in their endeavours but sometimes engage in substance abuse and clubbing in Ilorin Metropolis, Nigeria; there was a significant correlation between values priorities and in-school adolescent lifestyles in Ilorin Metropolis, Nigeria. It was therefore recommended among others that parents should make efforts to instil the right type of values in their children and motivate them to prioritize its elements so as to positively shape their lifestyles; teachers should embed values in their relationship with in-school adolescent (students) because they are role models to students; students should engage in lifestyles that are conformity with societal/national values; there is a need to make available and adequate up-to-date teaching and reading materials for students and teachers to facilitate the implementation and attainment of religion and national values curriculum.
