Item Arabic and Islamic Education in Private Arabic Schools: An Assessment of Teaching Process in Az-Zumratul Adabiyyah School, Ilorin(Faculty of Education, University of Ilorin, Nigeria, 2018-09-23) Abdullahi, Musa Siddiq; jimba, Abdulhameed IsholaThis paper assessed the teaching process in Az-Zumratul Adabiyyah, School of Arabic and Islamic Studies, Ilorin. The study adopted descriptive survey research type with a questionnaire titled: “Teachers’ Questionnaire on the Use of Instructional Resources and Methods of Teaching Arabic and Islamic Studies” used for data collection. All the teachers teaching in the school constitute the total population for the study while all 20 teachers teaching Arabic and Islamic Studies were sampled in the study, but 18 of them who returned their questionnaires were used. Test re-test method was conducted and gave 0.76 co-efficient to achieve reliability. Three research questions guided the study. The Percentage and Frequency Count were used to analyse the data collected. The findings of the study revealed among others that, most of the respondents were not used to using varieties of instructional resources. It was therefore recommended among others that, the teachers of the school should go for in-service teachers training course to improve on their use teaching skills.Item Arabic Students' Perception of the Roles of Arabic Education in Sustainable Development in Kwara State, Nigeria(Faculty of Education, Federal University of Kashere, Gombe State, Nigeria, 2021-06-25) Abdullahi, Musa SiddiqLanguage is the parameter for effective communication in a multi-cultural and multi-lingual society. Language has contributed massively in turning the world into a global village and as well plays a significant role in the formation and upholding national and international values. Arabic as a language plays a prominent role in the facilitation and promotion of inter-cultural communication and sustainable development. This study investigated the perception of Arabic students on the roles of Arabic education in sustainable development in Kwara State, Nigeria. Arabic students in the study consisted of all undergraduates and postgraduates in the state. These groups of students constituted the population for the study. 270students were sampled using a purposive sampling technique. Researcher’s designed questionnaire was used to elicit information from the respondents. The instrument was validated by three experts in Arabic Education, Measurement and Evaluation and yielded a co-efficient of 0.72 when subjected to a test-retest reliability procedure through the Pearson Product Moment Coefficient. The data collected was analysed with the percentage, t-test and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) at 0.05 alpha level. Findings from the study revealed that Arabic students held positive perception on the role of Arabic education in sustainable development. The study recommended that multilingual education (which embeds Arabic Education) should be encouraged and promoted across the nation via the re-branding of language education policy. This could help to promote the role of Arabic education in the national sustainable development.Item Attitude of Military and Paramilitary Officers towards the Role of Arabic Language in Addressing Security Issues in Nigeria(International Islamic University, Malaysia, 2018-04-07) Abdullahi, Musa Siddiq; SALISU, MusaThis study is a descriptive research that addresses the role of Arabic in handling security issues in Nigeria and the attitude of security officers towards this role. Arabic plays a significant role in addressing security challenges because it has the ability to solve problems between groups of people by ensuring an atmosphere of understanding and peaceful co-existence. The study's population consisted of all Nigerian military and paramilitary officers. Using stratified random sampling, 50 officers were selected from the Nigerian army, air force, police, and civil defense corporations in the North-east totaling 200 respondents altogether. One research question and one hypothesis guided the study. An “Arabic Language Education and National Security Questionnaire” questionnaire, with a reliability of 0.76, was used to collect data. Descriptive statistics in the forms of frequencies and percentages were used to answer the research question, while one-way ANOVA was used to test the hypothesis at 0.05 significance level. The findings reveal a significant difference in the perceptions of Nigerian military and paramilitary officers regarding the role of Arabic in tackling security issues. It was recommended, among others that, the government recognize Arabic as a language equal in rank to English in Nigeria and utilize it as a medium of communication and instruction. The study suggests that Arabic be incorporated into the in-house training for military and paramilitary officers in charge of Nigerian national security.Item EFFECT OF VISUAL RESOURCES ON THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF UPPER BASIC STUDENTS IN ARABIC LANGUAGE IN ILORIN METROPOLIS(Faculty of Education, University of Port Harcourt, 2016-03-27) Abdullahi, Musa SiddiqABSTRACT This study investigated the effect of visual resources on students’ performance in Arabic language in Upper Basic Schools in Ilorin Metropolis. A quasi experimental design informs of the null-equivalent pretest, posttest control group design was adopted for the study. The sample consisted of one hundred and eighteen (118) students of Arabic language drawn from two sampled upper basic schools in Ilorin West and Ilorin East Local Government Areas, Kwara State. Two schools were purposively sampled for this study. The experimental group comprised of 62 students while control group comprised 56 students. Both groups were exposed to pre-test to determine there previous knowledge and post-test after taught for three weeks. Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) was used to test all the hypotheses formulated. The findings showed that the students taught using visual resources performed significantly better than their counterparts taught without using visual resources. Another finding shows that male students taught with visual resources performed better than their counterparts (females) taught without visual resources. Based on the findings, it was recommended among others, that, teachers of Arabic language should expose their learners to constant use of visual resources, as this will promote learning, active engagement in the class, and self-motivation in Arabic lessons.Item Impact of Boko Haram Crises on School Attendance in Yobe State, Nigeria(Department of Educational Managment, Faculty of Education, University of Ilorin, Ilorin, 2014-08-05) Abdullahi, Musa Siddiq; Oniye, Moshood IbrahimABSTRACT This study assessed the Impact of Boko Haram crises on school attendance in Yobe state. All the schools in the state constituted the study population, while schools with high rate of Boko Haram insurgency constituted the study sample. The purposive sampling technique was used to select 10 schools with high rate of Boko Haram insurgency. A researcher-designed questionnaire titled “Boko Haram Crises and School Attendance Questionnaire (BHCSAQ) was used to elicit information from the respondents. Four hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. Both face and content validity was done by 3 experts in the field of measurement and evaluation Department of Social Sciences Education, University of Ilorin, and the test re-test method was employed to ascertain reliability of the instrument within an interval of three weeks. A reliability coefficient of 0.67 was obtained. The data collected were analysed using percentage, frequency counts and the t-test statistic appropriately. The analysis revealed that the insurgency of Boko Haram had negative impact on the students’ attendance in the schools in the state; there was no significant difference in school attendance among male and female students; there was no significant difference in school attendance in rural and urban schools in favour of urban area. Based on the findings, it was recommended that the government should sensitise the people to the importance of security matters in the schools; the school management should beef-up security as a way of reducing unexpected attack on the schools in future; the federal government should improve security in schools in the state; and rehabilitate the schools destroyed during the insurgency.Item The Influence of Teachers on the use of Instructional Materials for Arabic Language Instruction in Ilorin Metrolpolis(Department of Sociology, Bayero University Kano, 2011-11-03) Abdullahi, Musa SiddiqAbstract This study assessed the influence of teachers’ variable like experience and qualification on their use of instructional materials for the teaching of Arabic Language in senior secondary schools in Ilorin metropolis, Nigeria. The variables of qualification and years of experience were considered on the use of instructional materials. All the teachers of Arabic in the senior secondary schools in Ilorin metropolis constituted the study population. The target population was the teachers of Arabic in the selected schools where senior school certificate examination Arabic curriculum was implemented. All the 21 twenty-one teachers of Arabic in the 14 public and 7 private schools that registered their students for SSCE were used in the study. Two research hypotheses were formulated and tested using Chi-square statistical analysis. The findings showed that qualification and experience have influence on teacher’s use of instructional materials. Based on the findings: recommendations were given: teachers should be oriented on the use of instructional materials through attendance of seminars, workshops, and that both the government and school proprietors should support teachers financially for improved efficiently on their job.Item Peace and Religious Studies Education for Social Transformation: A Conceptual Analysis(Department of Religious Studies, Gombe State University, Gombe State, 2015-12-15) Olowookere, Solomon Kehinde; Abdullahi, Musa Siddiq; Badru, Surajudeen AdewaleVarious crises have left a negative impact on many societies even at the global level. Such crises have caused loss of lives, loss of properties and dispersion of the socio-economic life of the people. In most parts of the world, crises have left their enduring legacies of tension, insecurity, mutual suspicion, arms build-up, and negative inter-religious relations. Since the incidence of September 11, 2001, when a terrorist attack was launched on the United States of America, peace education and religious studies have become major issues in understanding inter-human relationships. This is because they have the social function of regularity the relationship among human beings in a society. Peace education is essential in building a culture of peace through generating peaceful attitudes, dispositions, values, behaviors, action orientation and social structures. Peace education and Religious studies must be positive, integrative, restorative, generative and transformative. Their goals are to eliminate violence, crises, and promote voice-free communication, conflict resolution, and socio-economic development. This paper examines the Concepts of Peace, Peace Education, Religious Studies Education as well as the significance of Religious Studies Education. It tries to show how peace education and religious studies education can bring social transformation in the 3rd world countries.Item PERCEPTION OF ISLAMIC STUDIES EDUCATION STUDENTS ON STUDENTS ON ARABIC RELATED COURSES IN FACULTY OF ARTS, UNIVERSITY OF ILORIN(Faculty of Education, AlHikmah University, Ilorin, 2017-12-12) AbdulGaniyu, Sebutu S.; Abdullahi, Musa SiddiqThe researcher observed that quite a disturbing number of Isamic Studies Education students prefer to take English related courses from other unit as elective, where Arabic related courses are among the provided options. They have indicated that such students run away from Arabic related courses. On this note, this study investigated the perception of Islamic Studies Education students on Arabic related courses in the Faculty of Arts, University of Ilorin. A total number of one hundred and eighteen (118) Islamic Studies Education students in the Department of Arts Education, University of Ilorin were adopted as sample for this study. Simple random sampling technique was used to select the sample. Questionnaire was carefully designed for the purpose of collecting relevant information from respondents. Inferential statistic of Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was used to test two hypotheses the remaining one hypothesis was tested using Pearson product-moment correlation statistics. The finding showed that there was a significant difference on the impact of Arabic Language and the studying of Islamic Studies. It was recommended that Islamic Studies Education students who are deficient in Arabic language should embark on Arabic language proficiency classes within and outside the campus, so as to overcome the challenges they might encounter in the Arabic related courses.Item PRONUNCIATION DIFFICULTIES IN ARABIC SYLLABLE PATTERNS AMONG UPPER BASIC HAUSA-SPEAKING STUDENTS IN KANO STATE, NIGERIA(Alhikmah University, Ilorin, Nigeria, 2017-07-05) SALISU, Musa; Abdullahi, Musa SiddiqThe relevance of Arabic language and its study in the world generally, and particularly in Nigeria, cannot be overemphasised. However, in the process of learning this language, there are always some indispensable learning difficulties, especially in the pronunciation aspect. Therefore, this study investigated the pronunciation difficulties in syllable patterns among Upper Basic Hausa-speaking students in Kano State, Nigeria. The data for the study were obtained from the 3 senatorial districts of the State, involving 9 Local Government Areas, through a researcher- designed pronunciation test. 180 Upper Basic Hausa-speaking students of Arabic were selected from 3 private and 9 public basic schools, using stratified and purposive sampling techniques respectively. The variables of interest were gender and school type. Frequency, percentage and chi-square were employed to analyse the data collected. Findings of the study revealed that students’ pronunciation difficulties cut across gender and school type as there was no significant difference in the syllable patterns that constituted pronunciation difficulties for male and female Upper Basic Hausa-speaking students in public and private basic schools in Kano State. It was concluded that, three of the six identified Arabic syllable patterns exist in Hausa and therefore do not constitute pronunciation difficulty for Hausa-speaking students. It was therefore, recommended that stakeholders, including curriculum developers, syllabus designers and textbook writers should take cognizance of the students’ pronunciation difficulties when producing their respective Arabic education-related instructional materials.Item Social Networking and Academic Performance of Undergraduate Students in Universities in Kwara State, Nigeria(Department of Educational Foundations, Faculty of Education, University of Benin City, Nigeria, 2016-05-10) Abdullahi, Musa Siddiq; Opaleke, IdowuABSTRACT This study investigated social networking and the academic performance of students in the Universities in Kwara State. The study was a descriptive survey type. The population consisted of all university undergraduates in Kwara State, Nigeria, while the target population was undergraduates in two selected Universities in Kwara State. The purposive sampling technique was used to select the two Universities which are; University of Ilorin, Ilorin and Al-Hikmah University, Ilorin. The proportional stratified sampling technique was used to select 90 respondents from University of Ilorin and 60 respondents from Al-Hikmah University totaling 150 respondents. A questionnaire titled “Social Networking and Academic Performance Questionnaire” (SNAPQ) was used for data collection. Test re-test method was employed for the reliability with 0.76 coefficient. Two research questions and four hypotheses guided the study. Percentage was used to answer the research questions while t-test and ANOVA were used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. Findings revealed that a majority of the respondents sspend more than three hours on social networking sites daily. There was no significant difference between students’ use of social networking site and their academic performance based on school type, there was a significant difference between length of stay on social networking site and academic performance of students and also, there is a significant difference between the use of social networking site and academic performance of students in various specializations. It was recommended among others that University undergraduates should see social network as an avenue to connect with fellow students, locally and internationally and University management, parents and government should monitor social networking activities of their students, children and citizens to check the excessive and abusive use of the platforms without invading their privacy. It is an index of identity which serves as a repository of a people’s culture, industry and exploits. The relationship between language and society cannot be over-emphasized in the overall development of any community. This paper examined the stakeholders’ views on the role of Arabic education in promoting religious and national values among in-school adolescents in Kwara State, Nigeria. The stakeholders in this study consisted of members of Muslim community organisations, Arabic and Islamic Studies teachers/lecturers, undergraduates/ postgraduates of Arabic and Islamic Studies, and parents in Kwara State. All these groups of people constituted the population for this study. 774 stakeholders were sampled using a simple random sampling technique. Researcher’s designed questionnaire was used to elicit information from the participants. This instrument was validated by two experts and yielded a co-efficient of 0.72 when subjected to a test-retest reliability procedure. The data collected for this study were analysed using percentage and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) at 0.05 level of significant. Findings obtained from this study revealed among others that Arabic education could promote in-school adolescents’ better understanding of Islam and promote religious and national values among them. There was a statistically significant variation in stakeholders’ views on the role of Arabic education in promoting religious and national values among in-school adolescents. The study recommended that government should abrogate the current elective status of Arabic and religious education at the Basic and Senior Secondary classes and make both compulsory subjects.Item University Of Ilorin Final Year Students’ Experience In Practice Teaching Exercise(National Research University Higher School of Economics, 2017) Abdullahi, Musa Siddiq; Salisu, MusaPractice teaching is a vital aspect of the teacher preparatory program in teacher training institutions. This study examined the University of Ilorin final year students’ experience in a practice teaching exercise. It made use of descriptive survey research design. The population for this study were all students of the Faculty of Education, University of Ilorin, Ilorin, Nigeria. The researchers’ self-developed questionnaire with a reliability coefficient of 0.63 was used for data collection while the data collected were analysed using descriptive statistics of mean and standard deviation and inferential statistics of independent t-test. It was found that during the course of practice teaching exercises, student-teachers acquired skills which enabled them to use a variety of teaching methods, and instructional resources, improved their skills in tests construction, scoring and recording, built their teaching confidence and presentation, among others. However, student-teachers were faced with a number of challenges in the course of lesson presentation during practice teaching. It was, therefore, recommended among others, that student-teachers should not perceive their personality and logical presentation of instructional objectives as challenges but rather should embrace and exploit it to improve and widen their (cognitive) domains.
