dc.description.abstractTechnology has transformed the teaching and learning process beyond the classroom walls. Reading unlocks the doors of the riches of knowledge and acts as a tool for learning. The smartphone is a mobile phone that performs many of the functions of a computer, typically having a touchscreen interface, Internet access and an operating system capable of running downloaded apps. Thus, leveraging on technological advantages through the use of smartphones to acquire knowledge and reading skills is relevant to all categories of students but its diverse functionalities can make it a source of distraction in learning exchange. The study investigated the use of smartphones and the reading habits of public secondary school students in Ibadan. The simple random sampling technique was adopted in the selection of the public secondary schools and the sample from the population. Results showed that the majority of the respondents owned a smartphone and possess a positive attitude towards reading books. The result further revealed that the effects of smartphones’ use on the reading habits of the respondents are that smartphones provide the opportunity to find books to read online and prepare for the examination. Considering the ubiquitous nature of smartphones and their role in the 21st-century learning space, it is recommended that stakeholders in the education industry should integrate digital mobile technologies into public secondary education learning space as this would encourage positive use of smartphones for academic-related activities across all classes for better academic attainments.
