Abstract
Early childhood care education is an important component of universal basic education. It constitutes a crucial stage as well as a critical period in the life span of a child. It connotes an early intervention in child's physical, social, intellectual, emotional and spiritual well-being. This paper aims at providing conceptual framework of early childhood care education, its history and overall philosophy in Nigeria. The paper examined early childhood care education as a viable tool of influencing some specific areas of child growth and development, owing to its future prospects and challenges. It concludes by establishing that effective funding, and evaluation, partnership and collaboration from stakeholders, child friendly environment, proper health and nutrition among others, will go a long way in actualizing quality early childhood program me in Nigeria
