Abstract

ABSTRACT Result oriented teaching and learning process depends heavily on educational resource provision. Learning hardly becomes meaningful and impactful when done in abstraction. Educational resources, when made available help teaching to be meaningful and learning becomes permanent. It is line with this background that the study investigated resources availability and utilization in public secondary schools in Kwara State. Checklist was designed to enumerate the resources available in the schools and as well record their level of utilization. The study found a high level of resource availability in the schools, especially human resources (Teachers 94%, clerical staff 78.5%, Administrative staff 90%,), some physical resources available was also very high(Classrooms 94.8%,Library 90%, Administrative building90%,Staff common room 80%) however, available laboratories was very low(38%). The space utilization rate of classrooms was 118.3% indicating 18.3% over utilization while time utilization of classrooms was 93.3%. Teachers in the schools were found to be adequately engaged with minimum of 15 periods per week, which translates to average of 11,25 hours of teaching per week per teacher. It was thus concluded that, human resources like teachers and administrative staff were adequately provided in the schools. It was also concluded that some human resources like laboratory assistants and librarians needed in the schools were inadequate. It was therefore recommended that, more classrooms should be provided to prevent overcrowding, also more laboratories and laboratory material should be provided while human resources that provide complementary services to teaching learning process should be recruited.
