Abstract

This study investigated factors influencing Junior secondary school student participation in physical education in Ilorin west local government area of Kwara state. The descriptive research design of the survey type was used for the study. The population consisted of all physical education teachers and vice principals in junior secondary schools within the study area. Stratified and random sampling techniques were used to select 100 respondents for the study. Researcher-structured questionnaire was used to gather information for the study. The instrument was validated by three lecturers in the department of human kinetics education, university of Ilorin. Reliability of the instrument was established through test re-test method using Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation (PPMC) Statistic. A coefficient of 0.75 was obtained. The research instrument was administered by the researcher and three trained research assistants. The data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics of frequency and percentage for personal data of the respondents, while inferential statistics of Chi-square (X²) was used to test the hypothesis at 0.05 alpha level. Sport facilities and equipment, materials and qualified personnel have significant influence on the students’ participation in physical education in junior secondary schools. Based on the findings the study recommends that, there is need for school management to make adequate provision of sports facilities and equipment so as to improve students’ participation in physical education. There is need for teachers to also improvise instructional materials to teach physical education while qualified teachers should be employed to teach physical education so as to enhance students’ participation in the subject.
