Abstract

Teachers’ effectiveness is an important ingredient for the attainment of secondary school goals and objectives. However, certain behaviours such as indiscipline exhibited by some private secondary school and sub-par working condition such as pay and job security is suggesting a potential low effectiveness among these teachers which spark the interest of considering variables that could bring about improvement in the level of teachers’ effectiveness; thus, the study examined the relationship between principals’ leadership practices and teachers’ effectiveness in private secondary schools in Kwara State.The research design adopted was descriptive survey of correlational type. Proportional and convenience sampling technique was used to select 341 out of 3119 teachers of private secondary schools in Kwara State. Two validated questionnaires titled: ‘Principal Leadership Practice Questionnaire’ and ‘Teachers’ Effectiveness Questionnaire’, with Cronbach Alpha coefficient of 0.78 and 0.82 respectively were used to obtain data from the respondents. Mean and standard deviation were used to answer the two research questions raised while the hypotheses were tested using Pearson product-moment correlation (PPMC) at 0.05 level of significance. The findings of the study among others showed that the level of teachers’ effectiveness was generally moderate and principal motivational practice is the mostly adopted practice by private secondary school principals. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended, among others, that principals of private secondary schools in Kwara state should maintain their motivational practices and also adopt and practice more of teamwork practices with their teachers in order to ensure high level of teacher’s effectiveness
