dc.description.abstractThis paper discusses relationships between the concepts of Translation and adaptation by analyzing its challenges particularly apparent in Sumair Abdu Robihi’s translation of Wole Soyinka’s Ake: years of childhood into Arabic. It is important to note that comparison of Arabic and English literary texts from different authors with different background in religion and region is rare among Arabic scholars in Nigeria. Although, similar studies have been carried out by scholars in this context but such studies majorly focused on authors from the same background. The adopted methods of this paper are analytical and descriptive involving the extraction of some terns from both the source and translated languages and their analysis taking into consideration the cultural background of the authors. Findings indicate that Yoruba poems contained in Soyinka’s Ake are not complex, yet some of the translated version of the poems in Sumair’s work is not targeting the contextual meaning in the source language while few are not translated; identify the techniques used by the translator in the target text to imply the use of pragmatic adaptation such as omission, expansion, exoticism, creation and transcription. These findings could be applied to other similar works of authors from different background in the effort to further the studies of translators.en_US
