Influence of coaching styles and motivation on performance of athletes in University of Ilorin

Abstract

Motivation entails body’s inner state of necessity which orients and directs the behaviour towards its satisfaction while coaching style is a method adopted by the coach that has either positive or negative effect on athletes’ performance. This study therefore examined influence of coaching styles on performance of athletes in University of Ilorin. The objectives of the study were to examine; (i) intensity (ii) incentives (iii) coaching styles and (iv) giving awards and scholarships as motivation for performance. Descriptive research of survey method was used for the study. The population of the study comprised of coaches and athletes from five team sports. 5 coaches were selected through purposive sampling, while 133 athletes were randomly selected to make a total of 138. Self-structured questionnaire validated by three experts in the field of Human Kinetics, University of Ilorin was used as research instrument. A reliability value 0.75 was obtained through test retest method. The null hypotheses were tested at 0.05 alpha level. The findings revealed that intensity of training, coaching style, recognition in form of cash awards and scholarships had significant influence on motivation and performance of athletes in University of Ilorin. The study recommends that coaches and administrators should ensure regular payment of allowances as and when due to the athletes, provide free accommodation and scholarships for the athletes, while coaches should be trained on the various coaching styles to be adopted in different situations to improve athletes’ performance.
