dc.description.abstractThis study investigated the trends of drug use an abuse among secondary school students in Ilorin South Local Government Area of Kwara State. The research design adopted for this study was descriptive survey research method. Simple random sampling technique was used to select one hundred (100) students from five (5) secondary schools. A structured questionnaire designed by the researcher was used for data collection, which was validated by three experts from the department of human kinetics education and health promotion and environment health education in University of Ilorin. The reliability of the instrument was also ascertained through a test re-test method with a reliability coefficient of 0.6r Descriptive statistics of frequency count, percentage and inferential statistics of chi-square was used to analyze the demographic data and hypotheses were tested at 0.05 alpha level. The findings revealed that secondary school students commonly used and abused are alcohol, cannabis and cigarette. Availability of hawkers and indiscriminate sales of drugs by patent medicine stores a major cause of drug abuse among the study population. Parents, friends and media advertisement mainly influenced students to engage in drug abuse. It was recommended that government should strengthen laws on purchase and indiscriminate use of drugs, government should also regulate the activities of drug hawkers. Parents should educate their children to avoid bad friends.en_US
