| dc.description.abstract | Newspaper cartoons though may be terse, sententious, a mere caricature, and indeed may more often than not, command less respect than a full narrative, paradoxically, they are more widely read, deciphered and more potent in a communicative event. In spite of the ingenuity required to produce it and because of the economy of time and space in using a cartoon to discuss, traditional newspapers find it handy especially at the time of uprisings. This said, at the time of socio-political unrests as exemplified by the 2020 #EndSARS uprising in Nigeria, traditional news media outlets, as expected, contributed to public fear and uncertainties surrounding issues at the centre of discourse, in this case, police brutality which has been a notorious feature of insecurity confronting citizens of the nation. Information about the EndSARS protests is often complicated by the activities of partisan political actors all of whom are constantly fighting for legitimacy. It is against this backdrop that this article examines how mainstream news organisations in the country have deployed political cartoons in the framing of the protests, focusing on the most prominent themes and the implications of such portrayals. | |
