Abstract
Domestic violence is a pattern of behavior in any relationship that is used to gain or maintain power and control over an intimate partner. Some couples experience domestic violence due to nagging, religious beliefs, culture, alcoholism and this sometimes run into problems and naturally couples are not meant to be abused. The study investigated influence of domestic violence on marital relationships among couples in Ilorin west LGA in Kwara State. Five (5) research questions were raised and two (2) hypotheses were formulated and tested at 0.05 levels of significances. Survey research design was adopted for the study. The total population was one thousand eight hundred and thirty three (1,833). The sample for the study comprised two hundred (200) respondents constituting approximately 11% of the population. Multistage sampling techniques was used to select sample for this study. 200 couples were selected at random from Ilorin west LGA, Kwara State. Domestic Violence and Marital Relationship Questionnaire (DVMRQ) is the instrument that was used for data collection for this study. Research questions 1-5 were analysed using frequencies, percentages, mean, standard deviation and cross tabulation. The Null Hypotheses formulated in the study were tested with inferential statistics such as t-test and pearson product moment correlation at 0-05 level of significance at which the hypotheses was rejected or accepted. The findings revealed that domestic violence significantly influence marital relationships among couples as they experience lack of peace in the home ( 3.17) 50% , lack of unity in managing resources ( 3.01) 40.5%, lack of communication between partners ( 3.01) 42.5%, reduction in love for one another ( 2.96) 39%, deprivation of family needs ( 2.71) 27.5%. Result of the findings revealed that domestic violence significantly influence child upbringing as they experience intense anxiety, worries or new fears ( 2.76) 35.5%, become easily startled, jumpy or nervous ( 2.75) 38%, avoid spouses during violence ( 2.68) 31.5%, have repetitive talk or play about the violence ( 2.52) 27%, have problem going to sleep or being sleepy ( 2.50) 29.5%. The study concluded that domestic violence significantly influence marital relationships of couples as they experience lack of peace in the homes, lack of unity in managing resources, lack of communication between partners, reduction in love for one another, deprivation of family needs, can lead to aggressive sex against spouse. Couples should practice open communications to avoid problems. The study recommends that couples should develop trust and not being judgemental with each other in order to maintain stable relationship.
