| dc.description.abstract | The decision to identify as part of an ethnic group indicates one's membership in that group. However, one may, for several reasons, decide to change their ethnicity, and many of these are influenced by personal, social, or cultural factors. It is important to note that changing one's ethnic nationality is not a common practice from the legal perspective in Nigeria. This paper seeks to examine the chances under which a person could be eligible for a change of ethnicity in Nigeria. It further seeks to examine the existing legal framework in place that validates the concept of ethnic change. For this research, the doctrinal research methodology was employed. In so doing, the paper uses primary and secondary legal sources. The primary sources include statutes and judicial decisions, while secondary sources include journal articles, online materials, books, and legal commentaries. The research finds that countries like Singapore and Indonesia validated the idea of ethnic change and permits their citizens to switch their ethnic groups twice in their lifetime. However, there is no sufficient legal framework in Nigeria that could accommodate the change of ethnic nationality, especially as it relates to the Marriage Act, which happens to be a personal law concept. Hence, the paper recommends that our personal laws be reformed to accommodate opportunities for ethnic change in the same way the Constitution provided for citizenship. Hence, it is important to state that the opportunities with respect to ethnic change options could be harnessed to drive home the unity of Nigeria as to bridge the gap that encourages dichotomy between the ethnic groups. | |
