Abstract Students poor performance in both internal and external examinations in biology attracted concern from stakeholders in recent time. These poor performances have been linked to quality and quantity of instructions received by students and particularly the use of laboratory facilities to enhance effective learning. This study was therefore conducted to investigate the availability and level of use of laboratory facilities in teaching and learning of biology in secondary schools in Ilorin, Kwara State , Nigeria. Being a descriptive study of a survey type, the sample frame for the study consisted of 12 (public and private) secondary schools in Ilorin, Kwara State. The main instrument for the study was a researcher designed questionnaire which captured statement on availability and effective utilization of materials considered relevant for meaningful learning of biology. Of all the recommended facilities as contained in the checklist obtained from West African Examination Councils (WAEC), fifty (50) basic facilities were investigated in this study. The findings of the study revealed that few of the facilities investigated were available in the schools. Hence, it was concluded that basic facilities were largely not available, where available not properly utilized. Based on the finding, it was recommended that adequate use of instructional materials, particularly laboratory facilities that could enhance students learning in secondary schools be provided and utilizeden_US
