Abstract

The work reported in this paper involves studying the energy consumption for optimizing poultry yield in Nigeria using NEFRADAY farm as case study. The energy consumption of the hatchery section of the farm alongside the environmental temperatures for a period of thirty (30) days were measured. The temperature data were analyzed to determine the heating degree day for the period and this was related to the energy consumption for each day. The linear regression obtained between energy consumption (EH in kWh) and the heating degree-day (DH in degree Celsius-day) was: EH = 4.448DH. This equation was applied for estimating energy consumption for all the months of the year using available calculated degree-days for Ilorin. It was concluded that February is the period that is most suitable for hatchery business in Ilorin since the energy consumption is lowest for that month.
