Abstract

For many years, Shell Petroleum Development Corporation (SPDC) and other multinational oil corporations operated in the Niger Delta without following the principle of social responsibility. This was because they felt that the development of the area was not their responsibility but that of Government. Following youth restiveness, SPDC changed its policy of non — involvement and embraced social responsibility for community development programmes. This paper will examine the various community development programmes of Shell Petroleum Development Corporations in Niger Delta Nigeria. The effect of these development programmes on the people will be examined
