Abstract
Language or dialect shift has become a social phenomenon. It is usually a situation wherby the speakers of one language or dialect volitionally abandon their dialect for another. It may also be through conquest, marriage, economy (job opportunities), etc. While language language shift is most commonly observed and disscused by researchers, this study examines dialect shift and its attendant sociocultural effects on the affected speech community. This research focuses, in particular, on the Igbomina speaking Idofian community in Kwara State, Nigeria. The research methodologies used are: questionaire, interview and observation. Findings reveal that due to its promixity to Ilorin, the state capital, the Igbomina dialect spoken in Idofian has been overshadowed by the Ilorin dialect. Even though the two dialects are from the Yoruba stock, slight differences abound which make them unique in their own settlement or world.
