Abstract
Bad governance in Nigeria is an issue that has elicited reactions from different perspectives globally. The effect of bad governance in Nigeria is examined from the study of the Eastern Niger Delta of Nigeria, which is one of the most populous regions endowed with abundant natural resources and numerous human capitals. Despite the endowments of the Eastern Niger Delta, the region grapples with poor economy and human capital development since the political independence of the country in 1960. The main trust of this paper therefore is that had governance and the resulting corruption are responsible for structural conflicts in Nigeria. The study adopted a historic and multi-disciplinary approach to conclude that bad leadership and governance are the root cause of conflicts in the Eastern Niger Delta.
