Abstract

Niger Delta Region of Nigeria is endowed with abundant natural and human resources which explains its enormous economic potentials. Political independence held out bright prospects of sustained economic development and prosperity for the region and the country at large. Ironically, the region has lagged behind other oil producing states in the world, in terms of economic development and self-empowerment of the people in the region. A combination of factors account for the unsavoury situation namely, poor leadership and governance, imperial history, human and property insecurity, insurgency, terrorism, vandalism, neo-colonialism, endemic corruption, neglect of agriculture, criminality and a general lack of infrastructural development, among others.
