Abstract

The main purpose of this paper is to provide historical background on agricultural teacher education in Nigeria and in an attempt to do that attention was paid to clarifying the concept of agricultural education. It further gives a brief explanation on teacher education, its philosophy and agricultural teacher education in Nigeria. It also provides detail historical antecedent of agricultural teacher education from the era of colonization when the Christian missionaries arrived in Nigeria with western education. It recognizes the key role of Ashby Commission recommendations in the establishment of advanced colleges of education and the commencement of the first ever B.Sc.(Ed) degree programme in Agricultural teacher education by University of Nigeria, Nsukka in 1962 with the assistance from Ford Foundation. Inadequate manpower, insufficient teaching and learning resources, lack of viable professional bodies and meetings, poor admission policy of some universities, inadequate training programme and poor funding of agricultural teacher education are some of the challenges identified facing agricultural teacher education in Nigeria. It is recommended among others that there is need for adequate funding through innovative means, training and re-training of agricultural educators.
