Abstract

Establishment and implementation of a standard method of measurement for building engineering services can significantly improve the reliability of project cost estimates and cost control of the entire building project. Current practices in the formulation of building engineering services contract price, was determined and the factors that influenced the current practices established. The provisions of the current standard method of measurement in use in Malaysia were examined in relation to current building engineering services procurement and cost management. A total of 47 tender documents was reviewed in Southern Peninsular Malaysia. The research has allowed conclusion to be drawn as follows: there is no uniformity in the tender documents prepared by various consultants for the procurement of building engineering services. Standard method of measurement could be used as a basis for forecasting price of building services. Factors that influenced its non adoption include inadequate design information on building services and slow learning curve by practitioners.
