Abstract

Comprehension and summary skills are highly essential to the success of a student for academic as well as all-round exploits. That is why candidates’ knowledge of the exercises is tested in major language examinations. Two comprehension exercises must be attempted by each candidate for a maximum of forty marks while only one summary exercise attracts thirty marks, thus jointly constituting 70 out of the 120 marks allotted to the English Language Paper To in the Senior Secondary Certificate Examination. Thus the module (chapter) discusses the importance of the two related skills, how to acquire them, and how to practice them. Practice exercises are also included to avail readers the opportunity to test their understanding of the tutorial. This, it is hoped, would go a long way in helping students pass the examination in this all-important subject, without which the desire to qualify for tertiary education may remain unattainable.
