Undergraduates’ Awareness and Use of Electronic Information Resources in the University of Ilorin, Nigeria
(Ilorin Varsity Internal Journal of Library and Information Science, 2024) aOlaronke O. Fagbola; Musa, AbdulkareemKayode
Electronic information resources (EIRs) are critical for undergraduates in the 21st-century learning environment. However, despite the numerous benefits of EIRs to research and academic activities, there is a concern that undergraduates may lack awareness of and fail to utilise these resources effectively. The study investigated awareness and use of EIRs among undergraduates of the University of Ilorin, Nigeria. The descriptive survey design was employed and the multistage sampling technique was used to select two faculties and 500 undergraduates from a total population of 45,885. A questionnaire was used for data collection. Five research questions were answered, while two hypotheses were tested at the 0.05 level of significance. The data were analysed using Statistical Products for Service Solution (SPSS) software. The findings revealed that the undergraduates in the sampled faculties were aware of and used EIRs for academic and research purposes. E-books, e-journals, e-conference proceedings, e-abstracts, offline databases, e-theses, dissertations, institutional repositories and DVD/CD were available. It is recommended that the management of the university library should continuously engage in awareness campaigns concerning the availability of EIRs for use by all.
