A DISCOURSE ON THE SUFI’S CONCEPT OF SAINTHOOD (AL-WILᾹYAH) WITH REFERENCE TO ḤADĪTH THIRTY-EIGHT (38) OF AN-NAWAWĪ’S FORTY ḤADĪTH
(Department of Islamic Studies, Faculty of Arts and Islamic Studies, Usmanu Danfoiyo University, Sokoto, 2020-06-07) Yusuph, Dauda Gambari
Al-Wilāyah is one of the major theories in Sufism which has attracted a wide range of attentions. The Sufis maintain parameters that are somewhat different from the propositions of other bloc of Muslims, especially the Salafiyyah. The paper therefore examines the theory of Al-Wilāyah as rendered by the Sufis vis-à-vis ḥadīth thirty-eight (38) of An-Nawawī’s forty Ḥadīth. It discusses various issues that are not only central to dissecting the conception of sainthood in Islam but also critical to map-read the minds of the Sufis on the subject matter. Adopting the exegetical method of research, it is discovered that both obligatory and non-obligatory acts are indispensible in the attainment of wilāyah and that no height of spirituality can exonerate one from cIbādah. The paper also discovered that a saint can achieve a high level of proximity to Allah than prophets and it is established that abiding love which engendered spiritual transformation as the main way for manifestation of sainthood.

A SUFI CATHOLICON FOR SECURITY CHALLENGE IN NIGERIA
(Department of Religious Studies, Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State, Nigeria, 2020-04) Yusuph, Dauda Gambari
Nigeria as a nation has been facing security challenges for a long period of time. The country is dominated with many problems which make the peace to be a relative experience in the land. There are problems of kidnapping, farmer and herders attacks, insurgency (Bokoharam) and militancy among others. There is no section of the country without a particular problem, all of which give rise to insecurity. This paper, therefore, aimed at studying the causes of insecurity in the country, while considering solutions that could be offered by Sufism through it doctrines and practices. The methods adopted are basically historical and analytical. The findings revealed that from every indication, materialism is the major cause of various problems that degenerated into insecurity in the country, but manifested in different dimensions. As the rich struggles for more material acquisitions, the poor continues to wallow in abject poverty. Each then reacts accordingly, which engenders insecurity. There is little or no traces of asceticism (zuhd), contentment (qanācah), satisfaction (riḍā), reliance or trust in Allah (tawakkul), reticence (warac) and patience (ṣabr) among other principles in Sufism which tend to build internal mechanisms that can douse unnecessary quest for wealth and materialism. The paper therefore makes a case for Nigerians to adopt these principles in order to make security of lives and properties a reality. Key words: Materialism, Asceticism, Contentment, Satisfaction, Reticence, Patience
