Item Foundation of social work(Department of Sociology and Department of Social Work, University of Ilorin, Ilorin, 2019) Yusuf, M.S.,; Abdulhameed, A; Oladeinde,D.D.Europe and America have a long history of formalisation of help and of social welfare. Many organisations were formed to champion this course. These organisations were predominantly popular institutionalisation pecially in England during the formalisation of the Elizabethan Poor Law of 1601. Other events that impacted the formalisation of help and welfarism are the Industrial and French revolutions, the First World War and America's 'Great Depression in the 1930s. The huge successes of the various programmes aimed alleviating and ameliorating the suffering of people of those periods paid more ictention to the establishment of a standardised welfarism profession. This radually led to the emergence of many social welfare workers who desired to be more proactive and productive by providing a wide range of services that were not just restricted to social welfare. Subsequently, humanitarian workers such as Mary Richmond and lane Addams emerged. Jane Addams was interested social welfare and how states had failed in discharging their duties of provision of social amenities to all and sundry. This assumption fuelled the development of social case work by Mary Richmond who believed that social problems stem from an individual problem(s) and as such, individual's needs must be prioritised. This subsequently led to her unique method called 'social case work'. Consequently, the idea of treating a personal problem as a unique rather than a collective problem inspired the profession to integrate social case work into socal welfare. The integration of social welfare with social case work thereafter metamorphosed into the development of Social Work as a discipline and profession today (Watts & Hodgson, 2019). This chapter therefore, looks at the concept of Social Work, functions of Social Work, principles of Social Work, ntervention process in Social Work, relationship between Social Work and other disciplines, fields or specialisations in Social Work and finally, theories in Social WorkItem Neighbourhood Pattern and Incidence of Crime: A Comparative Study of GRA and Kuntu Areas of Ilorin(Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Benin, 2017-06) Yusuf, M.S.,; Abdulhameed, A.,; Issah, M.ABSTRACT It has been observed that physical deterioration and social disorganization of neighbourhoods have links with the dramatic increase in the incidence of crimes. In view of this, a comparative study of incidence of crime in two neighbourhoods (Kuntu and GRA) in Ilorin, Kwara State was carried out. The target populations are the residents of the two areas. A total of two hundred and fourty (n=240) respondents were purposively selected from the two neighbourhoods (one hundred and twenty from each neighbourhood). Questionnaires were administered to the respondents in their respective residential areas. Out of the two hundred and fourty questionnaires that were administered, two hundred and twenty-five were completed and returned and good for analysis. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics such as percentile and mean score methods. The percentile method was used to analyze the socio-economic characteristics of the respondents in the two neighbourhoods; and the mean score method was used to compare the incidence of crime in the two neighbourhoods. The results revealed that the incidence of crime in Kuntu neighbourhood is higher; while the incidence of crime is lower in GRA neighbourhood.. Based on this conclusion, it was recommended that structural planning of deteriorated neighbourhoods and improving socio-economic conditions of the residents of unplanned neighbourhoods would go a long way in reducing the incidence of crime in Ilorin metropolis.Item Neighbourhood pattern and incidence of crime: a comparative study of GRA and Kuntu areas of Ilorin(Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Benin., 2017-06) Yusuf, M.S.,; Abdulhameed, A; Issah, MAbstract It has been observed that physical deterioration and social disorganization of neighbourhoods have links with the dramatic increase in the incidence of crimes. H.Abstract Ageing does not only change how people look, it changes how they think, behave and the functions of their body system. Even though, many elderly people experience a lot during this stage, social workers who work in care agency like geriatric homes are expected to be aware of some of the challenges during old age. This study investigates the major challenges that faced the elderly. In addition, the study also investigates the perceived knowledge and attitudes of social workers towards the elderly in Ilorin, Kwara state. Eleven participants who are social workers working in geriatric homes were purposively selected for the study. Data collected was analysed using thematic analysis. The study found stroke, memory loss, ageism, isolation and resource mobilization as the part of the perceived experience of elderly people. The traditional emphasis on family-centered care is fast becoming a relic of the past because of changes in family dynamics. The study recommends that there is need for government at all level to establish geriatric hospitals where the interdisciplinary team including the social workers who have a clear understanding of older people's challenges will be employed. Lastly, the paper concluded that there is little or no effort from governments to support geriatric institutions in Kwara state.
