Item CHARACTERIZATION AND EVALUATION OF MAHOGANY (KHAYA IVORENSIS) DUST-EGG SHELL-EPOXY COMPOSITES(ACTA TECHNICA CORVINIENSIS - BULLETIN OF ENGINEERING, 2021) Yusuf Lanre, Shuaib-Babata; Kabiru Suleiman, Ajao; Ibrahim Owolabi, Ambali; James, Adegbola; Tolulope, ObaniseThe conversion of bio-agricultural wastes into composite material for engineering applications is a strategy to add more value in waste utilization and help in the composites with epoxy resin and 10 wt.% NaOH treated Khaya ivorensis dust and egg shell particles were prepared by open molding technique. Tensile strength, flexural strength and hardness tests were carried out to evaluate the composite mechanical properties. The results showed that the tensile and flexural strengths increase with addition of reinforcement materials. The composite sample with 3 wt.% wood dust and 10 wt.% egg shell particles displayed highest tensile strength of 34.87 MPa, while the composite sample with 10 wt.% wood dust and 10 wt.% egg shell particles have highest flexural strength. Hardness value of the composite increases with addition of reinforcement materials and maximum at 5 wt.% wood dust and 10 wt.% egg shell particles. In addition, water absorption characteristics of the composite increases with increasing percentage of wood dust. Optimum composition of wood dust and egg shell can be used to produce polymer matrix composites with good mechanical properties.Item CORROSION INHIBITION EFFICACY OF HYBRID ORGANIC EXTRACTS FROM PROSOPISAFRICANA AND CITRULLUSLANATUS ON MILD STEEL IN ACIDIC MEDIUM(THE ANNALS OF “DUNAREA DE JOS” UNIVERSITY OF GALATI, 2023) Yusuf Lanre, Shuaib-Babata; Israel, Ayinde; Yusuf, Busari; Mubarak, Ameen; Raheem Abolore, Yahya; Ibrahim Owolabi, Ambali; Ishaq, Aremu; Sikiru, Abdulraman; Kabiru Suleiman, Ajao; Abdulateef, GarubaEach of Prosopis Africana pod extract (PAPE) and Citrulluslanatus (WMPE) performed quite well as green inhibitors in the electrochemical corrosion in acidic solution at ambient temperature in previous research. However, the hybridization of these compounds was varied with the concentration ratio in this study to optimize the efficiency of the green inhibitor in a hydrochloric acid medium using mild steel. The extraction process of the inhibitor samples was carried out with the Soxhlet apparatus using n-hexane as the solvent. Furthermore, the potential inhibition efficiency was monitored using various corrosion measurement techniques at room temperature. The inhibitive response of the extracts could be attributed to the adsorption of the extracts’ components on mild steel surface by physisorption mechanism according to the Langmuir adsorption isotherm model. The results revealed that inhibition efficiency (IE%) depends on the concentration of the extracts. The peak IE% values were obtained with a hybrid ratio of 3:1 (PAPE: WMPE) for gravimetric technique. Domestication of production of motorcycle components, being a significant means of transportation that is required for the development of any society was considered. Aluminium scraps from a waste dump and Belle and Oyun natural moulding sands in Kwara State, Nigeria, which have been previously recommended for non-ferrous casting in previous studies were considered and used for casting of motorcycle/tricycle parts (centre stand and brake pedal) using AFS guidelines. The scraps’ chemical compositions were analysed. Thereafter, some mechanical properties with the microstructure of the aluminium casts and that of commercially obtained imported types were examined using appropriate ASTM standards. Cast aluminium alloy produced using scrap had no casting defects and had some mechanical properties comparable to those available on the markets (imported). Thus, effective usage of naturally available moulding sands in Nigeria for foundry applications would help to proffer sustainable solutions to the nation’s economic problem as a result of the adverse effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.Item Inhibitive Potential of Prosopis Africana on Corrosion of Low Carbon Steel in 1M Hydrochloric Acid Medium(Deer Hill Publications, 2019) Yusuf Lanre, Shuaib-Babata; Hassan Kobe, Ibrahim; Ibrahim Owolabi, Ambali; Raheem Abolore, Yahya; Ishaq, Aremu; Kabiru Suleiman, Ajao; Abibat, PelumiRecently, there is quest for the use of inexpensive, non-toxic, non-biodegradable, readily available and environmentally acceptable corrosion inhibitor. Studies have shown that these properties could be achieved through the use of plants as inhibitor. Inhibiting effect of Prosopis Africana (Iron Tree) seed extracts were assessed on a sample of low carbon steel in 1M HCl with varying proportion of the seed extract using gravimetric, Tafel polarization and gasometrical measurement techniques. The results show that weight loss/corrosion rate decreases with increase in the extracts’ concentrations. Good inhibiting efficiency of Prosopis Africana extracts with optimum inhibiting efficiency of 97.7% at 1.0 g/l after 120 hours exposure in gravimetric measurement was attained. TAFEL polarization results revealed that the Prosopis Africana extract shows that the corrosion current density decreases with the increase in the concentration of the extract. The effective modelling and interpretation of adsorption isotherms reliably determine the level of accuracy of adsorption processes. This study aims to apply the adsorption models and inhibitive mechanism of Cucumber Peel Extract (CPE) and Cucumber Seed Oil (CSO) to corrosion of AISI 1007 steel grade in the saline medium using both the electrochemical (Tafel Polarisation) and non-electrochemical (Weight Loss) techniques. The chemical composition of AISI 1007 and the phytochemical properties of studied extracts were determined. Consideration was given to Langmuir and Dubinin-Radushkevich Isotherm models (D-RIM) to study the inhibitive properties of CPE and CSO on AISI 1007 steel in an aggressive medium. The result of inhibition efficiency from weight loss measurement showed maximum inhibitions of 94.44 % and 95.44 % with 1.0 g/L concentration of CPE and CSO respectively in sea water medium. The result of the studied extract at 25 ℃ in seawater showed that the corrosion current density of AISI 1007 steel decreased and increased in the inhibition efficiency with 87.33% and 94.67% for CPE and CSO respectively. The negative value of ΔGads was greater than 20 kJ/mol and was obtained as a result of electrostatic interaction between the adsorbed inhibitor molecules and the ions/atoms on the metal surface. The studied inhibitors were confirmed to be mixed organic corrosion inhibitors type. The values of E and maximum surface coverage (θmax) for the two measurements are satisfactorily in acceptable agreement as similar to the range of value obtained for inhibition efficiency.Item Performance and Corrosion Inhibitive Mechanism of Prosopis Africana Pod Extracts on Mild Steel in Acidic Medium(Uniport Journal of Engineering and Scientific Research, 2022) Yusuf Lanre, Shuaib-Babata; Israel, Ayinde; M, Ameen; Kabiru Suleiman, Ajao; Sikiru, Abdulraman; Ibrahim Owolabi, Ambali; Yusuf, BusariThis study investigates the influence of Prosopis Africana pod extract (PAPE) on corrosion behavior of mild steel in 1.0 M HCl. The Prosopis African Seed Extract (PASE) was previously characterized as a green corrosion inhibitor without considering its pod, which often constitutes environmental pollution. The PAPE solution was administered in varying concentrations of 0.0 g/ml to 10.0 g/ml as a green inhibitor of mild steel in 1M Hydrochloric (HCl) medium at room temperature using gravimetric, gasometric and electrochemical (Tafel Polarization) techniques. The volume of hydrogen evolution determined with gasometric process decreases as the concentration of the extract increases. The gravimetric technique recorded the highest inhibition efficiency (IE%) of 97.14% with a 1.0g/l concentration of PAPE. The electrochemical measurements of the corrosion current density (ICorr) decreased as the concentration of PAPE increased, with a maximum IE% of 80.59% (PAPE) at 1.0g/l recorded. Generally, IE% increases with the concentration of the extract. The decrease in the corrosion rate is caused by the intensified obstructive mechanism in the coupon surfaces instigated by the pod extract's adsorption. Hence, the extract from Prosopis Africana Pod is equally suitable as a green inhibitor for corrosion.Item Quality evaluation of commercially available steels in some selected Nigerian markets(ANNALS of Faculty Engineering Hunedoara – International Journal of Engineering, 2019) Yusuf Lanre, Shuaib-Babata; Kabiru Suleiman, Ajao; Hassan Kobe, Ibrahim; Ibrahim Owolabi, Ambali; Ishaq, Aremu; Reuben, Adewuyi; Jimoh, AbdulThe incessant building collapse and structural failures in Nigeria has renewed interests in the evaluation of the basic properties of reinforcing steel bars in Nigeria markets, since local markets serve as major source of supply for the steels used in construction and structural development. Thus, this study evaluated the quality of commercially available reinforcing steel bars in some selected markets with a view to determine their suitability for structural applications. Various steel bars samples were obtained from markets in four Nigeria cities. The basic physico-mechanical properties of the samples were examined and the obtained results were compared with the specified parameters in Nigerian Industrial Standard (NIS), ASTM and British Standards. Visual inspections revealed that most of the parameters that must to be indicated in identification marks on reinforcing steel bars were absent. Results also showed that the samples contained the basic chemical constituents of steel and possessed significant strengths and hardness values, but with noticeable inconsistencies in their contents. Thus, the level of compliance with the specified properties in the standards needs improvement. To avoid incessant structural failures in the country, regular and effective monitoring of the quality of steel bars in the markets for structural applications becomes imperative.
