Poverty is an age long problem which has characterized the developing nations. The effects of poverty on individuals and the society at large can not be over stressed. For instance: poverty leads to ignorance, malnutrition, poor health, begging, and prostitution, child labour, child trafficking and other social exclusion problems. Poverty is also capable of setting stage for deviance. Counseling as an essential part of education, aims at assisting individuals to actualize their potentials in order to reduce and eradicate poverty, illiteracy, diseases, ignorance, prostitution and other forms of negativity hindering national development. In view of the need to equip individuals with the necessary knowledge and skills needed to contribute to national development, this paper highlights the usefulness of counseling in alleviating poverty and offers some suggestions on how counseling can be employed to reduce poverty in Nigeria.Item Influence of Guidance and Counselling Services on Students'Career Choice as expressed by Teachers in Saki-east, Oyo state(Association of Professional Counsellors in Nigeria, 2019) Adeboye, Adenike Abiola; Yahaya, Lasiele Alabi; Bolu-Steve, Foluke Nike; Adeleke, MsIt is an issue in Nigerian secondary schools that students hesitate to visit school counsellors at will in making career decisions. Guidance and counselling programmes are used to assist every individual student to become better in all areas of' their lives such as: career decision making, educational. emotional, physical, social, psychological and vocational. This study investigated the influence of Guidance and counselling services on students’ career choice as expressed by teachers in Saki-east, Oyo state. A descriptive survey was adopted for the study. All teachers in Oyo state constituted population for the study while the target population consisted of selected teachers in Saki-East LGA. Oyo state. Simple random sampling technique was employed to select two hundred respondents from the ten public secondary schools that were randomly selected for the study. Three null hypotheses were formulated for the study. “influence of Guidance and counselling services on students' career choice questionnaire " (IGCSSSQ was content validated, with a reliability of 0.70 and administered to the respondents to collect relevant data. Frequency counts and percentages were used for analyzing demographic section while t-test and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) statistical methods were used in comparing the expressions of respondents on the basis of gender, religion and working years of experience. The findings showed that there were significant differences in the expression of teachers on influence of guidance and counselling services on students’ career choice on the basis of gender, religion and working years of experience. It is therefore recommended that there is need to revamp the career guidance programme in schools especially where there is a significant lack of career information in order to be self-determined in making career decision. Also, Counsellors should sensitize students on the need to acquire adequate vocational information and discuss same freely with their friends they may be able to make well informed careers.Item Patterns and causes of sexual harassment in Nigerian Universities as perceived by undergraduates of the university of Ilorin, Nigeria(Stirling-Holden Publishers Limited, 2011) Aina, Josphine Shola; Yahaya, Lasiele Alabi; Okesina, Falilat AnikeThe paper investigated the patterns and causes of sexual harassment in Nigerian universities as perceived by undergraduates of the University of Ilorin. A total of 600 undergraduates were selected using stratified random sampling technique. Data were collected from the respondents with the use of an instrument titled: “Patterns and Causes of Sexual Harassment Questionnaire”(PCSHQ). The hypotheses generated were analysed using the students t-test statistics and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) at 0.05 alpha level. The study identified the major patterns of sexual harassment as asking questions about students’ sexual life, telling sexual jokes and requesting for visits. Causes of sexual harassment as identified by the respondents include academic weakness, non-sanctioning of offenders and absence of national legislation on sexual harassment. The study indicated no significant difference in the perception of patterns and causes of sexual harassment on the basic of respondents’ gender. However, there was a significant difference in the perception on the causes of sexual harassment based on respondents’ age. Recommendations were made on the desirability of establishing counselling centres in Institutions of higher learning in Nigeria. Students need to be educated on the behaviours that predispose them to causes of sexual harassment (e.g. indecent dressing and late submission of assignment). Procedure for reportage of incidence of sexual harassment should also be made known to the students.
