Item Analysis of Rural Youth Involvement in Commercial Motorcycle Operation in Ilorin East Local Government Area of Kwara State(Department of Geography, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, 2013) Adefalu, Lateef Lawal; Usman, Bolaji Abdulkadir; Adisa, Rasheed Solagberu; Orioka, G.EThis study examines the implications of occupational migration of rural youth from farming to commercial motorcycle operation in Ilorin East Local Government Area of Kwara State. Data for the study were obtained through the administration of structured questionnaire. Twelve settlements with sizeable number of commercial motorcycle operators were purposively selected from which a total of 120 respondents were randomly selected for the study. The data was analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, mean ranking and the Chi-square statistical techniques. Results show that 57.5% of the operators were between 21-30 years old and have been frustrated out of farming by lack of access to agricultural credit, poor access to modern inputs, and other factors that result in low returns from farming. On the other hand, the stable income and relatively higher freedom in commercial motorcycle operation attract people into the occupation. The implications include reduction in area of land cultivated, lower productivity and reduced income from farming. Recommendations made include training the youth in modern farming techniques and introduction of appropriate policy measures to make agricultural loans easily accessible to people in rural areas.Item Climate Change Challenges in Nigeria: Planning for Climate Resilient Cities(Department of Geography and Environmental Management, University of Ilorin, 2010) Usman, Bolaji Abdulkadir; Tunde, Afolabi MonisolaClimate change is real and its impacts are already widely felt across Nigeria. This paper examines the impacts of climate change on Nigerian cities. It describes the relationships between climate change, human settlements and urban planning. Published and unpublished materials were used to describe the vulnerability of Nigerian cities to climate change challenges. It later argued for the need to develop appropriate planning strategies for mitigating and adapting to the impacts of climate change in Nigerian urban centres. The strategies suggested include providing adequate infrastructural facilities and strict enforcement of building codes and regulations.Item Effects of Oke-Oyi Irrigation Project on Food Production in Kwara State, Nigeria(Department of Geography, University of Ilorin, 2009) Usman, Bolaji AbdulkadirThe River Basin Development approach was adopted as reaction to the poor food situation in Nigeria. The study examines the contribution of the Lower Niger River Basin Development Authority’s irrigation project in Oke-Oyi, to food production in the area. Two kinds of questionnaire were used to collect information on production target, achieved level and problems faced in the project. Analysis of the data showed that, though, the target could not be met the achieved level was impressive. The paper further suggested ways of making the project more productive.Item FACTORS DETERMINING THE CHOICE OF RESIDENTIAL LOCATION IN ILORIN, NIGERIA(Zaria Geographer, Department of Geography, Faculty of Science, Ahmadu Bello University, 2015) Usman, Bolaji Abdulkadir; Malik, Nurudeen Adesola; Alausa, K. M.In most developing countries Nigeria inclusive, housing which is a basic necessity of life has continued to be a major problem. This research therefore examines the factors that guide an individual's choice of residential location in llorin city. It examines the various geographical, social, and economic factors of residential location choice. To achieve the aim of the study, 157 respondents were sampled using multi-stage sampling approach. The data collected were analyzed using descriptive techniques which include tables, cross tabulations, percentages, chart and the chi-square. The results show that various factors such as; income, security, distance, availability of social amenities among others were considered by respondents in choosing a place of residence. The result of the Chi-square analysis reveals that there is no significant relationship between income and distance from home to work. The study therefore recommends that government should ensure the mobilization of savings into mortgage institution, provide incentives for the capital market to invest in property development and provide social amenities in areas where they are lacking.Item Factors Determining the Choice of Residential Location in Ilorin, Nigeria(Department of Geography, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, 2015) Usman, Bolaji Abdulkadir; Malik, Nurudeen Adesola; Alausa, Kehinde MujibatIn most developing countries Nigeria inclusive, housing which is a basic necessity of life has continued to be a major problem. The spearman rank correlation analysis was used to establish relationship between the adoption of inputs and some socio-economic parameters. The result of the correlation analysis show that a weak positive relationship exists between level of adoption and the level of education of the farmers, size of their farms and the types of crops they planted. While a weak negative relationship exists between the level of adoption of agricultural innovation and the age of the farmers. The study suggests that, the socio-economic factors considered do not have any strong influence on the adoption of innovation by the farmers participating in the Oke-Oyi irrigation project.Item Impact of Rural Road Transport on Agricultural Production in Kwara State(Faculty of Agriculture, University of Uyo, 2013) Usman, Bolaji Abdulkadir; Adefila, James Olusola; Musa, Ibrahim JaroThis study examines the impact of rural roads and transport services on agricultural production in Kwara State, Nigeria. Data for the study was derived from a total of 546 respondents from three Local Government Areas (LGAs) spread across the three senatorial districts in the state. Ten rural settlements were purposively selected from each of the three LGAs giving a total of 30 sampled settlements. The data collected through structure questionnaire was analysed using the stepwise multiple regression analysis and principal component analysis. The results show that farm size, distance to major market, farming experience, age and nature of transport services available are important in predicting agricultural production in the area. Rural settlements in Kaiama LGA which has vast agricultural lands and high agricultural production were found to be the most inaccessible in the State. Poor transportation restricts expansion of agricultural production in this area, due to the low farm-gate prices. It is therefore suggested that Interventions in the transport sector should not be limited to provision of roads alone but should include measures that will help improve vehicle supply in rural areas.Item Perceived Causes of Livestock Involvement in Road Accident: Threat to Livestock Production among Women in Oyo State(Faculty of Agriculture, University of Ilorin, 2013) Adefalu, Lateef Lawal; Usman, Bolaji Abdulkadir; Omotesho, Kemi Funmilayo; Aderioye-Abdulwahab, Sidiqot Adeyemi; Olateju, O. AThis study examines women farmers’ perception on livestock involvement in road accident in Surulere L.G.A of Oyo State, Nigeria. Surulere LGA was purposively selected because most of its communities are located very close to the highways. Multi-stage random sampling technique was used to select 120 respondents for the study while interview schedule was used to elicit information from respondents. Descriptive statistics (frequency counts, percentages, Mean scores and ranking) and inferential statistics (Chi-square) were used to analyze the data. Findings revealed that the mean age of respondents was 46.5 years with a typical rural woman having an average monthly income of N12,250.00; 73.3% had one form of education or the other; 68.3% were full-time crop farmers while 16.7%, 11.7% and 3.3% combined trading, civilservice, and artisan work with livestock farming. Majority (77.5%) of the respondents had goats, while 52.5%, 29.2% and 33.3% kept poultry, sheep and duck respectively as income generating enterprises. Chi-square analysis showed a significant relationship between respondents’ perception on causes of livestock involvement in road accident and some of their selected socioeconomic characteristics (age = 0.00, education = 0.00 and experience = 0.00) of the. The study concludes that road accident constitutes a major threat to free-range livestock production in the study area. It is therefore recommended that road signs and speed breakers be constructed on highways that transverse the rural areas.
