Item A STUDY OF FARMERS’ ADAPTATION TO CLIMATE CHANGE IN ESAN WEST LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF EDO STATE, NIGERIA(Published by Department of Public Administration, University of Ilorin, Nigeria, 2015) Adeleke E.A.; Tilakasiri S.LThe impact of climate change depends on a range of parameters, yet climate change is threatening not only the sustainable development of socio-economic activities of a nation but also the totality of human existence. Presently, Nigerians has started to feel the effect of climate change as frequency and intensity of extreme events like floods, rainfall and drought have increased. The study investigated farmers’ adaptation to climate change in Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State. This study utilized primary source of data through the administration of questionnaires, direct interviews and direct field observations where 250 structured questionnaires were administered using simple random techniques. Tables and charts were used to present the data while regression and correlation and ANOVA were inferential statistics used showing that there is a strong relationship between weather event and farming activities. This also shows that agricultural production depends highly on climate change. Therefore effort should be geared towards providing farmers proper awareness and training in order to enhance their intellectual ability on adaptation and mitigation in the face of climate change. This study also suggests the need for government provision of proper and reliable information on adaption options for the farmers to harness in the face of climate variation.Item ADOPTION OF AGRICULTURAL INNOVATION AMONG FARMERS IN EDU L.G.A., KWARA STATE , NIGERIA(Published by Department of Geography and Environmental Management, University of Port Harcourt, Nigeria., 2016) Adeleke E.A.; Tunde, A.M; Tilakasiri S.LSustainable crop production is an important aspect of agricultural production that needs to be emphasized. This study examined various agricultural innovation on sustainability of crop production in Edu Local Government Area of Kwara State, Nigeria with a view to examining the socio-economic characteristics of farmers; farmers’ adoption of new innovation; and impact of adoption of innovation on farmers’ productivity and income. Eighty-five farmers were randomly selected for this study. Frequency tables, percentages, charts and analysis of variance were used to analyze the collected data. The study revealed that the new techniques on agricultural productivity have significant impact on farmers’ income (F=1.950, p<0.05).The study recommended an increase in the adoption of agricultural innovation which is a more potent approach to improve agricultural productivity among local farmers.Item ECONOMIC IMPORTANCE OF SAND MINING AND IT’S SUSTAINABILITY IN SUBURB OF OGBOMOSO NORTH, NIGERIA(Published by Department of Sociology, University of Ilorin, Nigeria., 2019-04-17) Adeleke E.A.; Tilakasiri S.L; Oyeleye E. O.The environment has been a source of raw materials like logs, herbs, food, forest, sand, atmospheric gases among others for human consumption. Sand mining is a process of extracting, refining and transporting of sand for final users. This research was carried out to assess the economic importance and sustainability of sand mining in ogbomoso North Local Government Area, Oyo State. The study area was divided into 6 locations; namely Egbeda, Iluju, Katagora, Onitinrin, Temidire and Yaku respectively. A total of 120 questionnaires were administered to farmers, landowners, sand miners and sand traders. 20 questionnaires were administered in each location to know the impact of sand mining on day to day activities of people. Descriptive method such as simple percentage, tables, and graphs were used to summarize people’s opinion. Inferential statistics(Analysis of Variance) was used to determine whether or not sand mining does contribute significant impact to socio-economic development of the study area. The result of the analysis revealed that sand mining contributes significant impact to socio-economic development of the area. Various factors such as urbanization, abundance of sand and high quality of sand are responsible for the increasing demand for sand in the study area. The study concludes that sand mining has a positive effect on the socio-economic life of people and it should be maximally sustained in the area. The study however recommends that environmental impact assessment should always be carried out in order to know sand yield capacity of the area.Item WEATHER INDUCED FLOOD AND FOOD SECURITY IN IFELODUN LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, OSUN STATE, NIGERIA(Published by Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Ilorin, Nigeria, 2017) Adeleke E.A.; Tilakasiri S.L; Lateef T.B.There are growing problems of extreme rainfall in the world today, which has made many towns and cities vulnerable to flood event. In recent times, flooding has been a recurrent problem in most part of the world due to severe weather. In Nigeria, there are many flooding report in some parts of the country during heavy downpour of rain which is threatening food supply. This study assess the effect of flood incidence on agricultural production in Ifelodun local government area of Osun State Nigeria. Descriptive statistics used in this study iclude mean, standard deviation, tables and charts. Questionnaire administration method was used to obtain information on weather and food security from 120 respondents in the study area. The result shows that, rainfall has resulted in flooding in the area and this has led to the low yield of agricultural products. Lives and properties were in jeopardy due to negative effect of flood in the area. Rural people are often susceptible to the menace of climate change and living standard is drastically reduced compared to urban areas. It is therefore recommended that, rainfall forecast should be communicated to the farmers which will enable them to plan toward the coming rainy season.
