    Cultural Tourism Sites in Kwara State: Potentials and Challenges

    Cultural tourism is the exploration and experiencing of cultural manifestations such as indigenous cultural practices rooted in the peoples' cultural festivals, carnivals, arts centres, arts exhibitions, museums, theatre and so on. Cultural tourism serves as an alternative to the dwindling revenues from oil and gas sector in Nigeria. Despite the huge potential inherent in cultural tourism, its development has not been given adequate attention by both the private sector and the state government. The Nigeria cultural policy states that the federal government of Nigeria shall promote domestic tourism and provide facilities for its promotion. However, this is not the reality in cultural tourism development and promotion in Kwara State. The position of the cultural policy on cultural tourism promotion is not the current reality as the state government failed to set up attractions for various available cultural sites to aid the promotion of cultural tourism in Kwara State. Given this, the paper examines issues relating to the development of cultural sites and effective cultural tourism promotion in Kwara State, Nigeria. The paper employs the descriptive method and interview instrument to interrogate reasons for low patronage of cultural sites in Kwara State. The paper reveals that low patronage of cultural sites is due to the non-availability of attractions with a beautiful ambience which can attract the local and international tourist, inadequate infrastructural facilities and lack of private sector involvement in the running of tourist sites. The paper concludes that cultural tourism relies on provision of infrastructures, effective promotion and efficient management of both human and material resources to promote cultural diplomacy and national development.

    THE ROLES OF CULTURAL FESTIVALS IN MANAGING HUMAN BEHAVIOURS IN A WON MASS WEDDING FESTIVAL OF SHAO PEOPLE

    The essence of traditional dances to the people of Africa cannot be over¬emphasised. This is because of its cultural, social- political and economic importance to national development. Dance serves as a means of information, education and entertainment. It also performs a therapeutic function in some cultures in Africa and other parts of the world. However, it is observed that Awon dance which is an integral part of Awonga festival of Shao people in Kwara State, has not been given adequate intellectual and scholarly attention when compared to other traditional dances in Africa. This paper, therefore, examines the significance of Awon dance in Awonga festival of Shao people in Kwara State. The study employs participant¬observation and interview methods. After a careful exploration of main themes and tendencies within Awon dance, it has come to the fore in this study that Awon dance contributes to positive change in behaviours and cultural emancipation of the people of Shao in particular and Kwara state in general. This study, therefore, concludes that there is need to revive the dying culture in Awon dance within the context of African traditional dances.

    THEATRE ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND THE MANAGEMENT OF GRADUATE UNEMPLOYMENT IN NIGERIA

    The number of graduates being produced by tertiary institutions in Nigeria has increased tremendously. Therefore, the need to create job opportunities for the Nigerian youths underscores the emergence of entrepreneurial skills acquisition programmes which the Federal Government of Nigeria adopted as measures of intervention for the promotion of entrepreneurship and youth empowerment. However, enough consideration has not been given to the exploration of theatre or performing arts entrepreneurial opportunities in the said government measures of intervention. Through the deductive and interview techniques, this paper identifies forty entrepreneurial potentials inherent in the performing arts which Nigerian youths cum graduates of theatre or performing arts can explore in their quest to be self-reliant and contribute to the economic development of Nigeria. This paper concludes that there is need to create enabling environment for young entrepreneurs not only through the establishment of empowerment programmes but also to encourage, prioritise, patronise, finance and recognise the significance of young entrepreneur to the development of a nation. Furthermore, the Federal Government of Nigeria should incorporate entrepreneurial potentials of the Performing Arts into its empowerment programmes.

    THEATRE OF COMMITMENT IN THE MANAGEMENT OF THE NIGERIAN NATION: A STUDY OF AKANJI NASIRU'S THE RALLY AND BAKARE OJO RASAKI'S ROGBODIYAN

    Theatre of commitment is an -ideological effort from the p-art of a committed playwright to write his works based on emerging issues which affect the wellbeing of the people. The focus of the ideological engagement of such playwright is to create an environment within the text in which issues that affect the people are portrayed and solutions are proffered. In viewof this socio-political and culturally inclined committed theatre, this paper examines Akanji Nasiru's The Rally and Bakare Ojo Rasaki's Rogbodiyan as committed theatre and paradigms for change management in the Nigerian nation. This paper employs deductive and descriptive methods of research. It has come to the fore in this paper that for effective governance and management of the Nigerian nation, national consciousness through people's participation in politics, quality leadership, accountability and transparency are paramount. This paper, therefore, concludes that the voices of Nigerians should be recognised and their fundamental human rights be protected by governing the Nigerian nation in accordance with people's yearnings and aspirations.
