Item British Adulteration of Traditional Political System in Nigeria: An Overview of Ilorin Emirate.(Arewa House, Kaduna, 2016-06) Saad Yusuf, Omoiya; Olaitan, Bashir Ibrahim; Rasheed, Onagun; Oladimeji Mohammed, Alabi; Agunbiade, NThe scramble for and partitioning of Africa by the European imperial powers created a new chapter in their relations with the people of the continent. This climaxed in the signing of the Berlin Conference of 1884/1885 and opened the flood-gate for actual colonialism in Africa. The institution of the colonial state had far-reaching negative impact on Nigeria’s traditional political system. Indeed, in some places, traditional leaders were deposed and sent on forceful exile while some even lost their lives in the process of resisting foreign rule. The British used coercion through the West African Frontier Force to subdue most Nigerian areas. They employed elements of diplomacy such as persuasion, threat and force in flagrant disregard for African indigenous political institution. In Ilorin, British employment of the Indirect Rule was informed by the need to intimidate the Emirate’s leadership, and in doing this the indigenous arrangement suffered some set-backs. For instance, apart from the loss of economic and social influence on the part of the Baloguns, the British infiltrated the political structure of the Emirate to the extent of reducing the Emir to mere message carrier, who must obey the dictates of the colonial government through the District Officer.Item DEVELOPMENTS AND FLUCTUATIONS IN ILORIN TEXTILE INDUSTRY IN THE TWENTIETH CENTURY(Department of History & International Studies, University of Ilorin, Ilorin, Nigeria., 2016-06) Rasheed, OnagunThe paper discusses the significance and values of Aso-Ofi craft to the development of the Ilorin Emirate in terms of income, revenue, employment, wealth creation, trade and market it had generated. The paper using oral interviews and some secondary sources, asserts that, the industry, which played prominent role in Ilorin economy crumbled in the late 1980s, as a result of the dwindling economic condition of the country that stemmed from the Structural Adjustment Programme and liberalization policy of Nigerian government. The study further states that, the effect of these policies like influx of undercapitalized and inadequately trained newcomers, importation of foreign textiles like Damask and lace, copying, undercutting, positioning of supply higher than demand, and the problem of debt, had downgraded, weakened and undersized the industry towards the close of the century.Item GOVERNMENT HOSPITALS AND MERE CONSULTING CLINICS: AN ANALYSIS OF KWARA STATE GOVERNMENT STANCE ON HEALTH CARE, 1968-DATE(2016-12) Rasheed, OnagunThe paper discusses the nature and character of government attitude to the provision of health care services in Kwara State since its creation.
