Item A Re-Appraisal of the Salafiyyah’s Discourse on Mawlidu ’n-Nabiyy(Department of Religions, University of Ilorin, Ilorin, Nigeria, 2019-12) Oniye Olayinka Ibrahim; Yusuph Dauda GambariMawlidu 'n-Nabiyy celebration is one of the most controversial issues among the Muslim scholars of various denominations. The issues around its legitimacy or otherwise have generated different reactions from the scholars, especially of Salafiyyah enclave who usually declared the celebration as a bid'ah that has enabled various abnormalities into the practice of Islam, considering the origin, ways and manners of its observation. Attempt is therefore made in this paper to appraise major issues that were raised by the Salafiyyah scholars on Mawlid. This is imperative because the celebration has become a dividing factor with polemics across board which needs to either be reduced if not totally eliminated. This paper adopted both analytical and historical methods. The former affords the opportunity to analyse various relevant works, while the latter avails the paper the privilege to trace related historical facts. The findings of this paper revealed that the basis for declaration of the celebration as bid'ah by the Salafiyyah scholars is unrealistic as there are reliable proofs that established it in Islamic sources. Also, it is discovered that the Salafiyyah's condemnation of the celebration is largely based on the manner of its celebration. This is what makes them to adopt the principle of throwing away the baby with the bath water. The paper concluded that Mawlid has credence from the Qur'an, Sunnah and the practices of the Salaf. It recommended that the celebration should be adopted by all while all abuses should be holistically addressed by scholars.Item A Survey of Islamic Medicine Stores in Ilorin Emirate(Department of Religious Studies and Philosophy, Faculty of Arts, Delta State University, Abraka, Delta State, Nigeria, 2023) Oniye Olayinka Ibrahim; Bello Ishola KhalidThe Islamic or Prophetic Medicine is one of the distinguished features of Islam which makes the religion an all-encompassing one. It has been trending across the Islamic nation but got attention of the people of Ilorin Emirate in the recent time. This study conducted a survey of the stores in the city where the items for Islamic medicine are being sold. The methods adopted are purely historical and descriptive. As the former availed the paper the opportunity to investigate into the historical facts which accounted for the emergence of the Islamic Medicine in Ilorin from the former popular Jalabi practices, the latter also provided the privilege to census and interview the practitioners. The finding of this work revealed that the emergence of Islamic medicine is linked aftermath of inherent imbalances that are associated with Jalabi and the increase in quest of Salafism. It is also discovered that the trend in the practice of the medicine today provides a better future for the community. It therefore concluded that Islamic medicine has the potentials for betterment of lives in the city and beyond and it is a viable outfit that one can venture into and build a career on itItem An Appraisal of the Practice of Sufism and Jalabi among Yoruba Muslims in Nigeria(Universitas Islam Bandung & Research Synergy Foundation, 2023) Oniye Olayinka Ibrahim; Yusuph Dauda GambariJalabi and Sufism are two abiding practices among Yoruba Muslims. Both have been instrumental to the consolidation and propagation of Islam across the Yorubaland. Many early Yoruba Muslims, especially Islamic scholars, were Jalabi practitioners and Sufi adherents. Still, both have been condemned recently by Salafiyyah scholars, who considered innovations (bid'ah). They even regard the two practices as synonymous. Conversely, the practitioners disagree with them and claim the legitimacy of the two practices in Islam. This study examines the two phenomena to the veracity of the two claims. Historical and exegetical methods are adopted. The former enables the assessment of historical facts connected to Jalabi and Sufism in Yorubaland. Also, the latter allows the interpretation of relevant works, especially the primary sources of Islam, to determine the legitimacy of the two variables. Findings revealed that both have credence in Islam and that early Muslim scholars devised Jalabi as a darwah strategy to propagate Islam. It also revealed that both exist independently, though combined by some scholars. The work concluded that neither can be displaced in Islam and that Salafiyyah scholars address each according to its peculiarities.Item An Examination of Salafiyyah Scholar’s Discourse on Kneeling and Bending as Manners of Greeting in Islam(International Islamic University, Malaysia, 2023) Oniye Olayinka Ibrahim; Yusuph Dauda GambariBending, bowing, and kneeling are popular greetings across various tribes and societies, especially in Nigeria. The admissibility or otherwise of these manners has attracted the attention of Salafiyyah scholars in Islam. Relying on different sources, both from the Qur'an and ahadith, the past and present scholars in the Salafiyyah bloc have declared these manners as forbidden in Islam, which may even constitute Shirk (associating partners with Allah). The objective of this paper is to examine various pieces of evidence that are relied upon by these scholars for making such declarations, having realized that the issues of kneeling or bending, among others, are not expressly declared as such in either of the two primary sources of Islamic legislation compared to other acts that constitute harām or Shirk. The exegetical and analytical methods of research were adopted in this paper. The two methods enable the assessment of relevant verses of the Qur'an and ahadith of the Prophet in the light of classical Mufassirūn's submissions on those verses and renditions of scholars like Al-Bani on most cited ahādīth on the issue of bending as a manner of greeting in Islam. After a critical examination, the finding revealed that most verses are grossly misconstrued; the most relied upon hadith is weak, while the supporting ones are unfounded. It is also discovered that there are a lot of misconceptions, misunderstandings, and overgeneralizations in the Salafiyyah scholars' submissions as regards the issues of bending and other manners of greeting. This paper, therefore, concluded that there is no substantive basis for a declaration of kneeling and bending while greeting as either harām or Shirk due to the absence of express provision from the Qur'an and hadith.Item Extravagance as Contained in Tafsir Fi Zilal ‘l-Qur’an and its Relevance to Nigerian Society(University of Uyo, Uyo, Nigeria., 2020-10) Oniye Olayinka Ibrahim; Yusuph Dauda GambariExtravagance (Israf) is one of heinous acts that the Muslims are warned to be wary of in the glorious Qur'an. The glorious book gives detail descriptions with specific examples of what extravagance is all about. Different scholars have expressed different views on it and have given different explanations for their audience to have a clear and better understanding of it. This paper discussed Israf as contained in Tafsir Fi Zilal 'l-Qur'an of Sayyid Qutb and related it to what is obtainable at both public and private lives in Nigeria. It is discovered from every indication that there exists a wide gap between the Islamic teachings on acquisition and disbursement of resources and what the Nigerians indulge in. Many factors that responsible for the variations are identified. It also included the implications and the consequences of indulging in extravagant life. The paper therefore concluded that efforts should be made by the people and the government of Nigeria to strengthen institutions that are put in place to fight corruption and other unethical practices in the society and to curb wastages.Item Interplay between The African Traditional and Islamic Medicine as Practice Among The Yoruba Jalabi Practitioners(Department of Religious Studies, University of Kashere, Gombe State, Nigeria, 2022-07) Oniye Olayinka IbrahimThe practice of Medicine is as old as man himself. This is because man is created to experience different phases of life as he lives; sickness is one of them. He gets healed through medicaments. The medical system depends on belief, culture, orientations and configurations of the people. African Traditional Medicine is one of the systems of medications. Another is Islamic method. With the contacts between Islam and Yoruba people, there had been interference between the two with noticeable areas of interplay which are responsible for some misconceptions in the society. In fact, many Yoruba Muslims could not differentiate between the two forms of medications. This paper therefore examined those areas of interplay with a view to separating the grain from the chaff. These include the case of sacrifice, herbs, incantation (ruqyah) among others. Analytical method of research was adopted to drive home the objectives of this paper. It was discovered that there is high level of interplay between the two systems, with negative effects on Islamic system. It is also discovered that Jalabi practitioners are the major actors in this regard. Also, the paper revealed that inadequate knowledge of Islam by the practitioners is responsible for the interlace. The paper therefore concluded that since Islam has its own medical system, Yoruba Muslim scholars should take up the challenge to engage in the medical practice and write to explain the permissibility status of the items and methods used by the Jalabi practitioners. This will help in sanitizing the system and eliminate unwholesomeness.Item Sayyid Qutb’s Exposition on Qur’an 17:33 and Its Relevance to the Nigerian Shari’ah Penal Code(Department of Religious Studies, Gombe State University, Gombe, Nigeria, 2019-12) Oniye Olayinka Ibrahim; AbdulWahab Danladi ShittuNigeria, like many other countries, is characterized by acts of disrespect, disregard and affront to human life. This is evident in the prevalence of killing, kidnapping, bombing and sacrificing of human beings for rituals. The action is against the teaching of Islam and thus, attempt is made in this paper to examine the relevance of Sayyid Qutb's exposition on the sanctity of life to the law in use in the Northern Nigeria. This work navigated through the expository effort of Sayyid Qutb on homicide as contained in Suratul 'Isra'. A combination of historical and hermeneutical methods are adopted to study the relevance of the views of the exegete to the provision for the offence in the shariah penal codes with the objective of appreciating the relevance of Shari'ah on the execution of the life of a deserving criminal. Findings of the work revealed that Sayyid Qutb narrowed his discussion on the legality for the execution of life as contained in the Qur'an just as he gave a literal interpretation to the Sunnah of the Prophet that legalizes the execution of the life of some category of people. This position is capable of allowing jungle justice in the execution of a criminal. It is in the light of the above that this paper condemns jungle justice in any form and recommends the adoption of Shariah as a legal system of the state.Item Sayyid Qutb’s Renditions on Fulfillment of Promises and their Relevance to Political Landscape in Nigeria(Department of Islamic Law, Al-Hikmah University, Ilorin, Nigeria, 2021-06) Oniye Olayinka IbrahimTo honour one's promise is paramount as far as Islam is concerned. Emphasis is placed on the fulfillment of promises in Islam to the extent that consequences await its non-fulfillment. This is because; it is the essence of honesty and integrity, both personal and social. In fact, fulfillment of promises and honoring trust are mentioned in different places in the Qur'an and Hadith, both with regard to pledges given to people or to God, by the individual, community or state, ruler or ruled. Practically, Islam has set an example for such fulfillment which humanity has never seen except under Islamic rule. However, Nigeria politicians are known with blank promises and care free for honesty and integrity. This could be inferred from their bogus manifestos during the campaign when they are in need of electorates. Thus attempt is made in this paper to examine the importance attached by Islam to the fulfillment of promise, honoring trust and the practices among the Nigeria politicians. This paper intends to map read from side to side the exposition of SayyidQutb on fulfillment of promises vis-à-vis the situation in Nigeria, the politicians to be specific. The method adopted in this work is descriptive because it addresses the issue that is contemporary. Findings in this research work show that the concept of fulfilling promises is of great importance, its non-fulfillment results to hypocrisy as far as Islam is concerned. The paper concluded that there exist a wide gap between the Islamic obligation of promise fulfillment and what is obtainable among the Nigeria politicians. Thus this paper recommends honesty and integrity to be our priority as this provides us the assurance for peace and tranquility in this world and hereafter.Item Umayr bn Sa’d, A Model for Nigerian Governors(Faculty of Arts, Ekiti State University, Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, Nigeria, 2018-11) Oniye Olayinka Ibrahim; Abdulwahab Danladi ShittuUmayribnSad, a Companion of the Prophet Muhammad (saw), was made a governor of Hims during the reign of Khalifah Umar ibn Al-Khattab. Several major cities and towns in the country have both Islamic medicine stores and medical hospitals where the health and medical needs of the people are attended to by experts in the field. The practice is so prevalent that the Nigerian government has licensed it in the country as an effective alternative medicine. Aged individuals, on the other hand, are one of the important categories of people that need special attentions due to the obvious decline in their physical and mental health. The decline has accounted for the strange attitudes they exhibited because their systems are not active as they used to before they attained the age. They therefore need special care, attention and treatments to enable them to live happily. The current economic reality in Nigeria with arbitrary inflation, uncertain means of sustenance and insecurity has adversely affected their access to orthodox medical care, thereby considering alternatives which Islamic medicine is categorized as one of them. The medicines and treatments are not only affordable and easily accessible but also effective because they are largely made from local materials. The study, which will adopt descriptive methods, aims to highlight various diseases and strange displays that are associated with old age and how they can be treated with Islamic medicine and within the general Islamic guidelines for medical practice. It will also discuss the Islamic rules for interacting with old people in the society.
