Item Sero-prevalence of brucella abortus antibodies in slaughtered cattle and meat by-product handlers in Ilorin abattior, Kwara state – Nigeria(Prime Journal of Microbiology Research (PJMR), 2012-03-28) Olabode HOK; Adah BMJ; Nafarnda WD; Aworh MKF and; Bello RHGrowing concern over the increasing number of women participation in post slaughter and meat by- product processing in Ilorin slaughter slab necessitated this study over a three month period in the year 2011. This was to establish the occurrence and possible effect of Brucella abortus infected blood on this vulnerable group. Sera obtained randomly from blood of slaughtered cattle fortnightly were screened for Brucella abortus antibodies using Rose Bengal Plate test (RBPT) and Microtitre Serum Agglutination test (MSAT) in accordance with standard methods. Out of the total of 261 cattle screened 10 (3.8%) were positive with 6 (2.3%) cows and 4 (1.5%) bulls. Amongst these positive cattle, white Fulani (Bunaji) breed showed the most infected 8(3.0%) and 2 (0.8%) in Sokoto gudali (Bokoloji) breed. Further analysis of sera by MSAT showed all the 3 (1.1%) positive were female white Fulani cattle. Cattle breed and sex showed association with the disease. Oral interview with a cross section of these women revealed that blood collected is processed into various meals for fish, pigs, dogs, poultry and the human delicacy popularly called “siki” as means of revenue generation and livelihood. Attempts to collect blood specimens from these workers for Brucella antibody screening yielded no positive efforts. In conclusion, this finding indicates the occurrence of Brucella abortus in cattle and by implication the possibility of transmission to these women and other domestic animals. Public awareness especially amongst vulnerable group on the potential dangers as well as creating and promoting women entrepreneurship in other economic sectors that have minimal occupational health risk factors is thus recommended.Item Serological Evidence of Contagious Bovine Pleuro-Pneumonia antibodies in trade cattle (Bos Indicus) sold in Kwara state-Nigeria(Online International Journal of Microbiology Research, 2013-01-12) Olabode HOK; Mailafia S; Adah BMJ; Nafarnda WD; Ikpa LT; Jambalang AR and; Bello RHA serological survey for the detection of antibodies to Mycoplasma mycoides subspecies mycoides small colonies (MmmSC) in trade cattle was conducted in four (4) cattle markets (Ilesha baruba, Ilorin, Bode Sadu, Ajasse Ipo) in four local government areas in Kwara State. This was to ascertain the prevalence of Contagious Bovine Pleuro-Pneumonia in trade cattle. Out of 169 cattle sera screened for mycoplasma antibodies 18 (10.65%) were positive to serum competitive ELISA (CIRAD) version: P05410/02 antibody detection kit. Ilesha baruba (Baruten LGA) recorded the highest prevalence of 9 (50%). Others indicated 6 (33.3%) in Ilorin (Ilorin East), 2 (11.1%) Bode Sadu (Moro LGA), and 1 (5.6%) in Ajasse (Irepodun LGA) respectively. Based on breed susceptibility, white Fulani breed of cattle showed 13 (72.2%), Sokoto Gudali 3 (16.7%), and 2 (11.1%) red Bororo. Based on sex susceptibility, 12 (66.7%) cows and 6 (33.3%) bulls were reactors. Age distribution, indicated young cattle 8 (44.4%) and Adult 10 (55.6%) were also affected. Although percentage proportional distribution of Contagious Bovine Pleuro Pneumonia carriers showed white Fulani, adult cows had more association with the disease. The occurrence thus confirms susceptibility of all sex, ages and some breed of cattle. In conclusion, this finding provides preliminary information on the prevalence and endemicity of the disease amongst trade cattle in the study area. Hence, suggesting Contagious Bovine Pleuro-Pneumonia could be an emerging trans-animal border disease. It is recommended that continuous surveillance and quarantine of cattle within herds and inter-state as well as national border control should be practiced. Re enforcement of eradication strategy through compulsory annual vaccinations is also advocated
