BAbstract This research examined the effect of the Mother- Tongue on students’ performance in the Senior Schools English in Ogbomoso South Local Government, Oyo State. The purpose of this study is to ascertain the role of the Mother Tongue as a complementary medium in English language class. Mother tongue is one’s first language; it is an instrument for the development of the human mind, it can help to get proficiency in other language, especially English language. English is the language of education, mass media, politics, commerce and socio-cultural life. It is very imperative to find out whether mother tongue has relationship with the English Language usage and performance in English. The Non-equivalent Control Group design was adopted for the study. Two groups were involved, one group constituted the Experimental Group while the other served as the Control Group. One hundred and eighteen students and five teachers were involved in the study. The instruments for data collection were pre-test multiple choice questions; teaching packages; and post-test multiple choice items in English language. The instruments were validated and used to collect data for the study. Two Hypotheses were postulated and tested using the Analysis of Co-variance at the 0.05 level of significance. The result of the study showed that a systematic use of the MT in the English class will present the teachers with the opportunities to equip learners with explicit knowledge of the language systems and ultimately aid mastery of the language. There is a significant difference in the performance of students in English when they are taught through the medium of English and the Mother Tongue than their counterparts in the control group. Again, there was no significant gender effect on the performance of students in English, when they were taught through the medium of English and the Mother Tongue. On the basis of these findings, it was recommended that teachers of English should incorporate the Mother Tongue of learners to effectively explain the content of the English when necessary.Item Effect of the Mother Tongue on Students' Performance in Senior School English in Ogbomoso, Nigeria(Institute Journal of Studies in Education, 2017) Ogunniran, V.O; Badru, S.AThis research examined the effect of the Mother-Tongue on students’ performance in the Senior Schools English in Ogbomoso South Local Government, Oyo State. BThe woeful performance of the students in Mathematics has been the concern of the students, parents, teachers, government and the society as a whole. It was the compelling issue that led to this study, and discovered that the mathematical concepts, terms and scales are difficult, and the fact that Nigerian students have to be taught in a second language compounds the problem. this research work examined the effects of the mother tongue (mt) on students performance in the senior secondary school mathematics in Ogbomoso South Local Government, Oyo State. Two purposes of the study, two research questions and hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. The non-equivalent control group design was adopted for the study. Two senior secondary schools were sampled from Ogbomoso South Local Government Area of Oyo State. One of the intact classes constituted the experimental group while the other served as the control group. One hundred and eighteen (118) students and five (5) teachers participated in the study: 62 students were in the experimental while 56 students were in the control group. The instrument for data collection were pretest, multiple choice questions; teaching packages and post test multiple choice items. The instruments were validated and tested for reliability at 0.693 and was used to collect data for this study. Two hypotheses were postulated and tested using the analysis of co-variance at 0.05 level of significance. The result of this study showed that there was a significant difference in the performance of students taught mathematics through the medium of English and the MT, and their counterparts (i.e. the 56 students in the control group) taught through the medium of English without the Mt. Thus, the study favoured the initial 62 students in the experimental group who learnt Mathematics through the medium of English and the MT. On the basis of these findings, it was recommended that teachers of Mathematics should use the MT and the language of instruction by code mixing and code switching to teach Mathematics effectively and to explain the content of the subject where necessary.Item LANGUAGE POLICY IN BASIC EDUCATION FOR ACHIEVING 2030 AGENDA FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT(INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF CONTEMPORARY ISSUES IN EDUCATION, 2018) Ogunniran, V.OThe purpose of this research study is to check the language policy in Basic Education for achieving 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The LGEA officers and Headmasters werepurposively sampled, while basic school teachers were randomly sampled for this study, and the total number of 100 participants was involved from Ogbomoso North and South local Government, Oy'o State, Nigeria. One research question and three research hypotheses were raised. The mixed methods approach of qualitative and quantitative questionnaire items were employed to elicit data from the respondents. The questionnaire entitled 'The Questionnaire on Language Policy in Basic Education for Achieving 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (QLPBEASD)' was used to elicit information. Mean rating was used to analyse question 1, ANOVA was used for analysis of research hypothesis 1, while T-test was the statistical tool used to analyse hypotheses 2 & 3. The theoreticalframeworks for this study are the Pressman & Wildavsty's (1973) policy implementation theory and Ruiz's (1984) theoretical orientations of language policy as a right and resource. Though, the goals of the mother tongue in the basic education are psychological, pedagogical and sociological, it was discovered that there was no significant difference in the responses of teachers based on their qualifications, school type and school location on the language policy implementation in basic education, the instruction was carried out through English (private) and code-mixing (public) in lower Basic schools, however MT was taught as a subject in basic schools' curriculum. Therefore, it was recommended that the LGEAs, SUBEBs, Ministries of Education should monitor language policy implementation at basic education levels and there should be provision of the human and material resources in order to achieve 2030 agenda for sustainable development.Item Senior Secondary School Teachers' Perception on the Challenges Facing the Teaching of Yoruba Poetry in Abeokuta South Local Government Area, Ogun State(Al-Hikmah Journal of Education, 2017) Ogunniran, V.OThis research work examined teachers' perception on the challenges facing the teaching of Yoruba poetry in senior secondary schools in Abeokuta South Local Government Area, Ogun State. Yoruba poetry is divided into two parts; oral or traditional poetry (ewi atenudenu tabi ewi abalaye) and written poetry (ewi apileko). Poetry is one of the three- genres of literature. The oral poetry is dominant in African countries before the arrival of the Europeans. Most of the oral poetry is in the written form now. The research design usedfor this study was a descriptive research of survey type. Fifty’ Yoruba teachers were sampled from 10 schools using purposive sampling technique. Research questions and hypotheses guided this study. A researcher-designed validated questionnaire titled: 'Senior Secondary School Teachers' and Students' Perception on the Teaching of Yoruba Poetry Questionnaire (SSSPTYPQ)' was used to elicit information from the respondents. Descriptive statistics of mean rating and ranking order was used to answer question 1, while the t-test and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) at 0.05 level of significance were used to analyse the hypotheses. The findings showed that there was no significant difference in the perception of teachers on the challenges facing teaching of Yoruba poetry in Abeokuta South Local Government Area based on gender and educational qualification respectively. However, there was significant difference in the perception of teachers on the challenges facing the teaching of Yoruba poetry based on teachers' experience.
