K.; Yahaya, L. A.; Robert, M. M.Bullying is a global phenomenon with devastating consequences for the victims, their families, and the societies at large. This study therefore investigated the behaviour patterns and predisposition toward bullying among secondary school students in Kwara State. Descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The population of the study comprised all SS 1 to SS 3 students in private and public schools in Kwara State which was estimated at 100,000 students. A total of 420 students (SS 1 – SS 3) were randomly selected from the population of secondary school students in Kwara State and they constituted the respondents. An instrument entitled “Behaviour Patterns and Predisposition to Bullying Questionnaire (BPPBQ)” was used to obtain relevant data. Content validity was used to ascertain the validity of the instrument while test retest method was used to determine the reliability of the instrument and coefficient value of 0.76 was obtained. Two research questions were raised and four hypotheses were analyzed using t-test. The study revealed that the majority of the respondents indicated Type A behaviour pattern. The behaviour patterns of the respondents include striving to achieve their goals in any situation; performing well in every activity they are involved and always conscious of time among others. The predisposition of the students towards bullying was low. Two hypotheses were not rejected while two others were rejected. Based on the findings, it was recommended that professional counsellors should provide early intervention to bullied and their victims in order to keep bullying behaviour in check; Professional counsellors should train students on the use of Assertive Training to provide assistance to the students, who are predisposed to bullying in the schools. Since students of public schools are more prone to bullying than students of private schools, it was recommended that the Kwara State Government should sensitize the public school teachers on the need to properly identify cases of bullying and make referral to professional counsellors.Item Causes of Child Abuse Among Students as Expressed by Police Officers in Ilorin: Implications for Counselling Psychology.(Published by the Society for Psychology in Sports and Human Behaviours, South Africa, 2018) Ogungbade, O. K.Students of tertiary institutions are faced with diverse challenges, and these range from academic to socio-economic ones. A trained counsellor should be well-equipped to help students deal with their challenges. The study investigated the factors that determine use of the counselling centre by students of University of Ilorin, Kwara State, Nigeria. The sample comprised undergraduate and postgraduate students of the University. The purposively sampling technique was used in selecting four large faculties in the University. In each of these faculties, simple random sampling technique was used in selecting one hundred students, making a total of four hundred respondents. Data were collected using a researcher designed instrument tagged "Factors for Counselling Centre Use Questionnaire (FCCUQ). The questionnaire was pilot tested, validated and the reliability co-efficient of 0.78 obtained revealed that the instrument was reliable for the study. The major findings of the study revealed that "vocational needs" is the highest factor that determines the use of the Counselling Centre by respondents. Also the finding of the study revealed that faculty, religion and course of study of the respondents significantly influenced the factors that determine the use of the Counselling Centre. However, no significant difference was found on the basis of gender. Based on the findings of the study, it was therefore recommended that NUC should encourage universities to set up guidance and counselling programmes in their institutions.Item Incidence of aggressive behaviours among hearing-impaired students as expressed by Teachers in Kwara and Oyo States, Nigeria(Department of Educational Psychology, Guidance and Counselling, Faculty of Education, University of Port-Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria., 2017-12) Ogungbade, O. J.; Ogungbade, O. K.; Fajonyomi M. G.Increase in mental health cases among adolescents of secondary school age as a result of drug abuse is of grave concern to Nigerians and international communities and it is begging for decisive attention. In recognition of the conjecture that adolescence is a critical time for prevention of diseases and mental disorders and for the benefits of basing mental health counselling programmes on the information need and seeking behaviour exhibited by the adolescent, the present study investigated abused drugs secondary school students seek information on; the reasons for seeking information on abused drugs; ascertained their sources of obtaining information and drew implications for mental health counselling. The study was a quantitative type, conducted using survey research method. The population consisted of all secondary school students in private and public schools with a sample size of 224 which was determined by Cochran’s formula and selected using multistage sampling technique. In collecting the data, a researcher-made questionnaire was validated and tested for reliability using Cronbach’s alpha method. The data collected were analysed using descriptive statistics including frequency counts and percentages. The findings revealed that the students sought information on array of drugs being abused at a varying degree but less interested in hard ones ; while the sources of obtaining information on drug use and abuse were ‘friends/peer group’, ‘ internet, ‘virtual social media’, ‘classroom teaching’ ‘school environment’, neighbourhood practice’, ‘television’ ‘siblings/family members’ with the least being printed materials in libraries, they searched for information mostly on how drug relate to ‘overcoming shyness’, ‘academic performance enhancement’ and ‘outperform in competition’. Implications of the findings for mental health counselling were drawn: that mental health medical counsellors should take account of the value of students’ behaviour in mental health counselling; recognise knowledge, information needs and seeking behaviour as integral of cognitive information processing approach (CIP) to decision making in counselling, as it concerns drug abuse and mental health, and; appreciate the outcome of information seeking behaviour research while developing mental health inventory and school counselling programmes on drug use. Lastly, the study implied that librarians, particularly medical librarians and professional counsellors, mental health counsellors need to collaborate in addressing mental health issues in the society, most especially in the educational institutions, through sensitization, workshops and conferences. Recommendations were provided based on the findings.Item Reality Therapy for reducing aggressive behaviours among students with hearing-impairment in Nigeria(Department of Educational Management and Counselling, Faculty of Education, Al-Hikmah University of Ilorin, Nigeria, 2021) Robert, M. The sample of the study was therefore 370 teachers in the state. A researcher-designed questionnaire (with reliability coefficient of the instrument is 0.75) was used for data collection. Percentage was used to answer the research questions while t-test was used to test the hypotheses formulated. The findings of the study include the following: students’ attendance, truancy, cultism and examination malpractice during unified policy implementation is just above average; students’ attendance, truancy, cultism and examination malpractice after unified policy implementation is just below average; there is significant difference between the students’’ conduct during and after the implementation of unified school uniform policy implementation; the disbursement of unique school uniforms to schools to serve the social demand of the populace; Marking of attendance should be given more priority and the observations should be followed up; and effort should be made by the school authorities to curb truancy among students.
