    Murdering democracy and thwarting people's will through intra-party conflicts in Nigeria: Lessons from Zamfara APC crises (2018-2020)

    One of the cardinal principles of democracy is 'majority rule ' which confers the right of governance on the majority of the people through an elected government on the platform of political parties. Since the return to democracy in 1999, the Peoples. Democratic Party (PDP) has never controlled the government structures in Zamfara State except when Shinkafi Mahmuda decamped to the party. The state is currently in the hand of PDP-a party that Zamfara people never gave their mandate. The papers traced and concluded that the depravation of Zamfara people of being governed by the All Progressives Congress (APC) the party they voted during the 2019 general election was due to the protracted crises within APC in the state. It relied on secondary data sources in arriving at these findings. The paper however concluded that intra-party conflict is harmful to the democratic development of Nigerian state. It recommended the adherence of party leaders and members to party rules as well as the strengthening of the country's institutional and political structures as a possible escape for future occurrences.
