Item Career Choice of Secondary School Students in Ilorin Metropolis(Journal of Capital Development in Behavioural Sciences, Faculty of Arts and Education, Lead City University, Ibadan, Nigeria., 2019-03) Odebode, Aminat A; Adebayo, David O; Jekayinfa, Oyeyemi J; Aburime, Aminat OThis study investigates the factors influencing career choices of secondary school students in Ilorin metropolis. It also examined the influence of gender, class level, religion and father’s educational status on the respondents’ expression. It employed a descriptive survey method. A total of 200 secondary school students in Ilorin metropolis were selected through simple random sampling technique. The participants responded to a researcher-designed questionnaire entitled ‘Factors Influencing Career Choice Questionnaire” (FICCQ). The validity of the instrument was done by a team of 5 experts from the Department of Counsellor Education, University of Ilorin. The reliability of the instrument was established using test retest reliability method which yielded a correlation coefficient of 0.61. The data collected were analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistics. For the demographic data, percentage was employed while t-test statistical tool was employed to test the four hypotheses at 5% level of significance. Results showed that the factors influencing career choice of secondary school students in Ilorin metropolis are ease of access to job opportunity (X=3.50), job remuneration (X=3.48), career guidance from school counsellor (X=3.45), societal values on jobs (X=3.44) family line of work (X=3.25), their performance in school subjects (X=3.20) and intellectual capability that they possess (X=2.50) among other factors. Similarly, there was significant difference in the factors influencing career choice of secondary2 school students in Ilorin metropolis based on gender (p=0.01), class level(p=0.02), religion (p=0.00), and father’s educational status (p=0.01). It was thus recommended that students should liaise with school counsellors to fully explore the factors influencing their career choices. Counsellors should ensure that students are given orientation as they move from one class to another. This is to ensure that all students, irrespective of gender and religion are abreast of the factors influencing career choice.Item Caregivers’ Perception of the Consequences of Breast Cancer in Kwara State, Nigeria: Implications for Health Educators(Department of Education, University of Maiduguri, Nigeria, 2017-09) Odebode, Aminat A; Adebayo, David O; Alwajud-Adewusi, Mariam BBreast cancer is one of the most common cancers and the highest leading cause of death among women. This study investigated the caregivers' perception of the consequences of breast cancer in Kwara State. Differences in the participants’ perception based on duration of care giving and level of education were also examined. This study employed a descriptive survey method. A sample of 100 women, who are caregivers, selected through purposive sampling participated in the participants in the study. A self-designed questionnaire titled Consequences of Breast Cancer Questionnaire,(CBCQ) was used for data collection. The validity of the instrument was done by experts in the Departments of Counsellor Education and Behavioural Science, University of Ilorin, Nigeria. The reliability of the instrument was established using split-half reliability method and correlation coefficients of 0.62 was obtained. The data were analysed using frequency counts, percentages and means and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) at 0.05 alpha level. The findings revealed that caregivers perceived consequences of breast cancer to be depression, chronic pain, emotional distress and death. It was also revealed that there were no significant differences in the participants' perception of the consequences of breast cancer based on duration of care giving and level of education. Conclusion was drawn that the consequences of breast cancer are devastating therefore, health educators should train caregivers through organization of workshops, on how to handle the consequences of breast cancer, with the aim of helping women with breast cancer cope with the found consequences.Item Influence of environmental factors on career choice of secondary school students in Ilorin metropolis: towards enhancing emotional wellbeing of adolescents(Faculty of Arts and Education, Lead City University, Ibadan, Oyo State, 2016-12) Odebode, Aminat A; Adebayo, David O; Jekayinfa, Oyeyemi J; Aburime, Aminat OThis study investigated the influence of environmental factors on career choice of secondary school students in llorin metropolis, Kwara state. The study also examined whether moderating variables such as class level, class type and gender would affect the respondents' views. The population consisted of 800 secondary school students that were randomly selected from florin Metropolis. The researchers employed descriptive survey method for the study. The instrument used was a self-designed questionnaire titled "Career choice Questionnaire (CCQ). The t-test and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) at 0.05 alpha level were used to test the hypotheses. The result revealed that environmental factors have a positive-influence on career choice of secondary school students in llorin Metropolis. Also, there was no significant difference on the influence of environmental factors on career choice of secondary school students in Ilorin metropolis on the basis of class level, gender and class type. Secondary school Counsellors should provide career guidance to learners on a continual basis during their secondary school education, so as to make adequate career choices and to enhance their emotional well-being , was recommended.
