    COMMUNITY POLICING AS A TOOL FOR SECURITY IN ILORIN METROPOLIS. PERSPECTIVE OF VIGILANTE GROUP OF NIGERIA

    This study examined perspectives of vigilante groups on community policing as a veritable tool in community security. Descriptive survey research design was used in this study. The paper has one research question and one research hypothesis to guide the study. The population for the study comprised both members of vigilante Group and member of the community. Multi-stage sampling procedure was adopted. At the first stage, a purpose, sampling technique was used to select two hundred (200) members of vigilante group. Simple random sampling technique was used to draw three hundred (300) respondents (members of the community) at the second stage. A structured questionnaire was used as the instrument for data collection. The reliability co-efficient of the instrument was done using test re-test technique and 0.87 was obtained which revealed that the instrument was reliable enough to carry out the study.The data collected were subjected to appropriate statistical analysis; mean rating and t-test. Hypothesis formulated for the study was tested at 0.05 alpha level of significance. One of the finding revealed that vigilantes adopt the use of problem solving technique to pro-actively address crimes in the community. It is therefore necessary to see the vigilantes as major security stakeholders in securing the immediate environment. Keywords: Community policing, vigilant group, Security

    IMPACT OF INQUIRY METHOD OF TEACHING IN ADULT LITERACY CLASS FOR EFFECTIVE LEARNING OUTCOME IN ILORIN METROPOLIS

    This study investigated the impact of inquiry method of teachingin adult literacy class for effective learning outcome in Ilorin metropolis. The study adopted a quasi-experimental design of pre-test, post- test to enable researcher evaluate the performance of the learners. The paper generated two (2) research questions and one hypothesis to guide the study. The population for the study covered all adult learner in Ilorin. Twenty (20) learners were sampled using cluster sampling technique, from two adult literacy centers’ in llorinEast and Ilorin South Local GovernmentArea in Kwara State. The participants were randomly assigned to experimental group (inquiry method) and control group (conventional method), were taught with detailed instructional programme in Social Studies which was designed in both methods. The researcher used 15 multiple questions tagged Social Studies Performance Test as the instrument. The test was administered on both groups in pre-test and post-test simultaneously by the researchers. The study covered a period of five weeks- Pre-test, 2nd -4th week- Treatment/ control (teaching) and 5thweek- post-test. Mean and standard deviation were used to answer both research questions while Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) was used to test the hypothesis, at 0.05 alpha level. Among other things, the study recommends the use of inquiry method in teaching adults in post literacy programme as if fosters deep understanding and assimilation of the subject matters.

    PROMOTING PEACE EDUCATION FOR NATIONAL SECURITY: IMPLICATIONS FOR EXTENSION EDUCATION

    Over the years, peaceful coexistence exists among the people in the country until recently when series of crises and conflicts have emerged and are emerging. This paper highlights the role of peace in building national security and by extension in ensuring sustainable development: It further examined the impact of peace towards the development of any given society. It glimpsed at the various roles of individuals in promoting peaceful coexistence among themselves irrespective of their personality, religion and the culture they represent. However, some agents of promoting peace were also explored in the likes of family, faith based organizations, community development associations, and national orientation agency among others. The study concluded that, peace education should be a continuous process in human endeavor throughout of school education programmes in the likes of extension education to promote harmonious relationship among the people without conflicts. The paper suggested that peace education should be made available at all level of our educational system in order to assists in transmitting knowledge of peace from one generation to another It focused on the concept, content and objectives of peace education.

    WOMEN EDUCATION: A MECHANISM FOR NATION BUILDING

    This paper looked in to women education and its importance as one of the vital tools for nation building. Education for nation building requires human resources of which women are included. However, various reasons why it became necessary to solidify and prioritize women education for sustainable development were discussed among which were economic status, political awareness, national growth and development among others. Despite non-rested actions from womenfolk to contribution their quota in nation building, there were many challenges facing the education of women standing as stumbling blocks to attain their educational pursuit which were also glimpsed at-in this study among the challenges are poverty, poor self-perception, too many responsibilities and the likes. Hence, womenfolk are indispensable in growth and development of a nation, the study therefore recommended that women should be allowed access to quality education so as to be adequately empowered.
