A; Saidu, A.Since emotional intelligence is still not wholly accepted despite evidences of its powerful influence in general setting, this study is conducted to identify emotional intelligence and anxiety, as well as their relationships with academic achievement. It involved a sample of 200 J.S.S 1 and S.S.S 1 students. Process of data collection was administered by using a set of questionnaire which includes a self report measure of emotional intelligence adapted from Schutte Self-Report of Emotional Intelligence (SSRI) and Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI). T-test analysis showed that there were no significant differences for the emotional intelligence level within all students between ages 13 and 16. However, there were significant differences for the emotional intelligence level among female students in accordance to age. The results showed that there were significant differences between emotional intelligence level of male and female students. Mean score of emotional intelligence of female students was higher than that of male students. Pearson correlation analysis showed that emotional intelligence levels of all students were significantly negative in relation to anxiety level. Emotional intelligence was also significantly positive in correlation with academic achievement of all variables including student's age and gender. The study revealed that anxiety was also significantly correlated in a negative manner with academic achievement among all students.Item Impact of poverty on the academic performance of students in some selected secondary schools in Ilorin South Local Government Area of Kwara State.(Department of Social Sciences Education, Faculty of Education, Universiy of Ilorin., 2018-03-15) Aburime, A. O.; Nuhu, M. A; Nafiu, Hakeem AyodejiThis study investigated the impact of poverty on the academic performance of students in secondary schools in llorin south Local Government Area of Kwara State. According to Kwara State Ministry of Education, there are one hundred and twenty-six (126) private secondary schools and twenty-three (23) public secondary schools. Ten (10) secondary schools using simple random sampling techniques constituted the study sample. Stratified sampling techniques was used by the researcher to select one hundred (100) Government students from the ten (10) secondary schools selected. A number of ten (10) Government students was chosen from each of the selected schools, A researcher designed questionnaire was used to elicit information from the respondents while descriptive statistics of mean was used to present and analyzed the data collected. The researcher used the inferential statistic of test-retest using Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient. The correlation coefficient (PPMCC) obtained was (r) at 0.05 alpha level. It was revealed from the findings that substandard education, financial constraint, low cognitive capacity etc. are the factors affecting academic performance of secondary school students in llorin South LGA. Based on these findings, it was recommended that parents should try as much as possible to provide for the needs of their children so that better academic performance can be enhanced.
